Tofte supervisors intend to keep the 2007 levy to $137,000, the same as 2006. “Our goal is to come to the town with the same levy as last year and to include the fire truck and the school,” said Chair Paul James.
Grand Marais’ Economic Development Authority has received a $200,000 infrastructure grant from the Iron Range Resources Board to be used for building roads in the Cedar Grove Business Park. “We are honored and humbled to be supported by so many people who have assisted us along the way,” said Matt Geretschlaeger, director of the EDA. Grand Marais is the first city to benefit from a new infrastructure fund created by the IRRRB for Range and North Shore communities. The grant follows on the heels of a $500,000 grant that the EDA received from the Department of Employment and Economic Development earlier this year for the business park.

More than 60 citizens of Grand Marais, Creechville and other Cook County areas gathered at the regular meeting of the county board Feb. 13 to protest against building a new jail and law enforcement center on the site above the ball field. Comments offered included having a mail-in referendum on the issue; building a unified building to include a jail and law enforcement center on the current courthouse property; and numerous concerns about how the construction will be paid for.
Northland Cable, provider of television cable service to subscribers in Grand Marais, received approval from the Cook County Board of Commissioners to locate their head-end equipment and four TV dishes on county-owned property above what is known as the old ski hill property. The intent is to put up a one-story 12-foot-square building to house distribution equipment and four satellite dishes. Nothing will be mounted on the existing towers, but a “feed” will be received from equipment already there.

With ice covering much of Lake Superior’s shore waters, it is not uncommon to see animals on the ice. Border Patrol Officer Curtis Thomson saw a wolf on the ice recently.
W.E. Shemild, who was a patient at the Veterans Hospital for a time, was able to return home. His knee injury has improved so that he is able to be about with the use of a cane.
Willy Rasmussen had his first plane ride when he returned home Saturday from a visit in Milwaukee and Chicago. He visited his mother’s two sisters, who took him to see a large greenhouse, and in walking around in it he said it seemed like being in Florida.

George Moses is able to be around again after being laid up all winter with a sore foot.
The Lake View Dairy is through putting up ice for this season. Sixty tons filled their ice house.
The library has a list of 995 books. Three hundred thirty-five have disappeared. Value $300. Please look. – Librarian
The Tormondson children of Colvill were skating on the lake Sunday when the ice broke loose from the shore. Mr. Samskar rescued them.
The state snow plow crew of Two Harbors went through to Pigeon River Wednesday and returned to Grand Marais.
