Lutsen supervisors voted to send a letter in support of increased commercial fishing to the Department of Natural Resources, Lake Superior Area Fisheries, as proposed by that group in a new 10-year fisheries management plan. The DNR proposal is to allow a commercial harvest of another 3,000 lake trout from Cascade River to the Canadian border. George Wilkes, a member of the citizen advisory group that worked with the DNR on the plan, said there is “definitely” a market for the fish.

The Middle School Student Council is organizing a sledding party at the Rec Park sliding hill from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12. Bring your own sled! Hot chocolate and cookies will be provided.

Feb. 12, 1996

Robert Brazell unveiled plans at the Feb. 5 meeting of the Grand Marais Planning Commission for a 24-room motel to be located next to Bally’s on Broadway across the street from city hall, an area known mainly for overflow summer parking and flooding during storms. When asked how he was going to deal with the flooding problem, Brazell said, “I’m going to raise the level.”

The brutally cold weather of Feb. 2 forced cancellation of the CCHS girls’ basketball game against Proctor. That means that after having almost two weeks off, the girls’ team begins a grueling schedule to wrap up the regular season. They are scheduled to play five games in just 13 days, including three games in a row.

Feb. 10, 1966

Fifty-three student musicians directed by Harold Ikola gave their mid-winter concert at the high school auditorium last Wednesday evening. Those who heard it appreciated a fine evening of music, but unfortunately the audience was not as large as it should have been.

Don Olson is hauling logs for Bob Brazell from the top of the Gunflint Hill. A truck with a trailer is the vehicle used so special caution will have to be observed on the narrow stretch.

The Minnesota bears transplanted the past couple of years in Louisiana may be homesick for Minnesota! So it seems to game wardens down south who found one of them some 275 miles from home near Houston, Texas. A local game warden reported that an adult male bear had been killed on the highway by a car, and it had an identification tag on it. It is believed the bear was trying to find his way “back home.”

90 Years Ago
Feb. 11, 1926

Henry Benson, who has been working at Hollow Rock, had his hand badly burned one day last week while he was filling a gasoline lamp. He is in Grand Marais having his burns treated.

Miss Faith Blackwell is now in St. Mary’s Hospital with rheumatic fever. She is in critical condition, but the doctors think she will soon recover. She has been delirious.

Emil Hall was badly hurt when struck by a truck that was going out of the Motor Inn Garage. He had opened the doors to let the truck out and was standing on the side waiting for it to pass when the vehicle struck the door and Mr. Hall in the chest.
