A special closed meeting of the Tofte Town Board was held Jan. 26, with the topic centered on negotiations to buy the Birch Grove Community Center from ISD 166. The board stated earlier this month that it is their goal to put the purchase price before the citizens of Tofte at their annual meeting.

Cook County Highway Engineer Chuck Schmit appeared before the county board Tuesday to present a new snow removal policy for consideration. Schmit said the purpose of the plan is “to tell the public what we do” during and in the aftermath of winter storms. The engineer said it was his hope that the policy would be used as an educational tool to increase public safety on county roads.

Jan. 29, 1996

The signing of a memorandum of agreement between the Cook and Lake county boards will complete the merger of court administration services under one department head. The consolidation has been under consideration for some months. The court administration offices at both courthouses will remain open and staffed as in the past.

The Cook County Economic Development Authority (EDA) held a special meeting Jan. 23 to review the nearly two dozen applications submitted for the job of administrator.

Jan. 27, 1966

Reserve Mining Company has reported its 1965 Silver Bay production reached a record 10,023,520 tons of iron ore pellets, an increase of nearly 4 percent over 1964. This is the first year in which production exceeded 10 million tons of pellets.

WDIO-TV, Duluth, began broadcasting on Channel 10 Monday. This gives Duluth three TV stations. Although the new station does not yet receive good reception here, it is hoped that some day it may be hooked up to the UHF system.

Julie Freeberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Freeberg, is working for the Department of Aeronautics at the downtown airport office in St. Paul. She is staying with relatives.

Jan. 21, 1926

Harry Helmerson left here Tuesday with a dog team for a trip into the north country.

Emil Johnson has resigned his position at the bowling alley and is now working at Scott’s Camp.

Sextus Lindahl, proprietor of the S-Curve Inn, Pigeon River, left Monday for his home in Superior.

L.H. Lien received a telegram Saturday night stating that his mother was dead. He left here Monday noon in his car for Wisconsin to attend the funeral. Mr. Lien met the bus at a turn on Good Harbor Hill, went in the ditch and turned over, breaking his top and windshield. The bus also went in the ditch and had to be towed out. Mr. Lien came back to town and took the bus later in the day.
