John McClure of the Cook County ATV Club asked Grand Marais City Council during its public comment period to consider adopting an ordinance that would permit the off-road vehicles to travel on city streets. McClure said there was no reason responsible adults with driver’s licenses couldn’t legally drive on the streets to make a trip to the store or a friend’s house. He also pointed out that there is an ordinance allowing snowmobilers to use city streets. The subject will be listed on the agenda for discussion at a future meeting.

The Schroeder Township board of supervisors approved a resolution agreeing that the county purchase new voting machines as authorized by the Help America Vote Act. Clerk Carol Tveekrem said allmail ballots are still allowed, but the motion allows the county to buy the machines.

Jan. 22, 1996

On Jan. 5, officers of the Cook County Sheriff ’s Department, the Minnesota Criminal Apprehension Bureau and the Duluth Police Department executed a search warrant on Redroof Street in Duluth, where they recovered approximately $3,000 worth of television sets, VCRs, stereo equipment, speakers and other household items that had been stolen in a series of Cook County burglaries during 1994 and 1995. Sheriff Dave Wirt said it appears potential charges for possession of stolen property will occur in Duluth or St. Louis County.

At the Jan. 9 meeting of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, some 25 citizens criticized the previous action of board chairman Wes Hedstrom in sending Champion Realty of Houston, Texas a letter opposing the sale of approximately 3,200 acres to the Nature Conservancy, whose apparent intent is to transfer the lands to state ownership.

Jan. 20, 1966

Dogs are believed to be chasing deer into the lake in the west end bay area. Dick Eckel has had occasion to turn two deer back toward shore just recently.

Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Zaske and their dog, Honey, came from Canton, Ohio to visit Mrs. Zaske’s sister Mabel.

Mr. and Mrs. Dan Olson of Texarkana, Arkansas, took the time between appointments at the Mayo Clinic to come here and visit the Roy Hedstroms for a few days. Mr. Olson is in a cast and is improving after his severe injury last November in the tunnel cave-in accident at the Arkansas River flood control project.

Jan. 28, 1926

Andrew France has finished his contract of painting and papering at Andrew Shold’s home at Rosebush.

Backlund Brothers of the Lakeview Dairy had the radiator on their truck frozen last Friday. Only one small pipe was burst.

A shipment of ice cream will be received Friday at LeSage’s Restaurant.

W.J. Forsythe this week purchased a new sedan through the Midway Service Station.

The Masons will have a dancing party Saturday night for their own members and members of the Eastern Star. All Masons and Stars, no matter where affiliated, their wives, husbands or sweethearts, are invited. It will be held in the Wigwam.
