Grand Marais public utilities customers will see an average increase of about $13 per month under a new rate structure approved Dec. 21 by the Public Utilities Commission. The new rates translate into an overall average increase of just under 10 percent for water, sewer and electric services. A typical residential customer will see an expected increase of $12.63 per month, $9 of which is for electricity.

The Cook County commissioners met Tuesday for their annual reorganization meeting, and retained Janice Hall as the board chair, and Bruce Martinson as vice chair.

The Grand Marais City Council is once again embroiled in a controversy regarding snowmobiles after a special hearing on an extension of the main trail north of the city brought angry property owners to the Jan. 2 public hearing on the proposed route. Concerns were expressed about noise, devalued property, and the safety of walkers and joggers who now use the trail.

The CCHS Vikings lost three straight games at the Ely tournament during the Christmas holiday break. The Timberwolves of Ely were the champions of their tournament, handily defeating each of their three opponents. The other schools competing were Littlefork/Big Falls and Toivola/Meadowlands.

Jan. 6, 1966

A 50-machine Ely-to-Grand Marais snowmobile caravan is expected Saturday, come wind or weather, and the Cook County Igloo will be the local hosts. The trek will not be made by way of the lakes this year because of the treacherous condition of the ice. They will be given a party at the Harbor Light, a luncheon and dinner. They will return to Ely next morning.

Thirty thousand gallons of water flowing through broken pipes did considerable damage at the Phillip Sjoberg house in the village recently. The house was unused at the time, the furnace had gone out and the pipes had frozen and burst, it was reported. The former tenants had left and the new ones had not yet moved in when the incident happened.

A dainty little airplane designed especially for women has been designed by a London manufacturer.Our Price And any woman sufficiently modern to want to drive an airplane is going to turn up her dainty little nose at any product.

Gustaf Anderson of Rosebush, while sawing a big cedar tree down last Thursday, found a black bear asleep in the stump. He tried to get him out alive but was forced to shoot him. The bear weighed about 200 pounds.
