At the Dec. 20 town meeting, Lutsen supervisors discussed the idea of appointing a town clerk, rather than relying on elections. The discussion was tabled following discussion and the board agreed to begin a public information process.
Cook County may be in line for more state aid highway funds if local officials are successful in their efforts to revamp the current classification system, which was last revised in 1957. If the proposed changes are accepted by the state, the result will be more funding for the county due to the addition of more roads with higher traffic counts. Two roads are proposed for removal from the system.

After two special meetings, the Grand Marais City Council voted to extend the city’s 3 percent lodging tax until Dec. 30, 1996. The meetings were called to prevent the tax from expiring on Dec. 30, 1995. It was feared that several months’ revenue could be lost while the city published notices of public hearings on the renewal of the tax, if it were allowed to expire. The city began collecting a 2 percent tax on Dec. 1, 1988, and beginning July 1, 1991, the tax was raised to 3 percent.
The Cook County Invitational Ski Race will be held on Jan. 4 at the Pincushion Mountain ski area just outside Grand Marais. At least 10 school teams and more than 200 skiers are expected to compete. Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in the varsity races with the top 10 receiving ribbons.

Jerry Spry and Ray Olson, who have been working in Kodiak, Alaska since May of this year, have returned to Grand Portage for the holidays. They said it took only six hours of actual flying time from Kodiak to Minneapolis by jet.
Two Canadians on their way to a church meeting in Duluth were killed Monday in a car-truck crash on Crow Creek about nine miles east of Two Harbors on Highway 61.
So far there has been no curling locally, but with cooler weather on the way action is bound to pick up. On New Year’s the men’s New Year’s Bonspiel will be held. Men are asked to sign up teams at the Curling Club.
Mr. and Mrs. Orel Benson and daughter Lynn made a tour of the southern part of the state of Iowa, visiting relatives and renewing old acquaintances.

The interior decorators are now putting the finishing touches on Fred Sjoberg’s new home.
William Bally shot a wolf Sunday near Rosebush town hall. He was on his way to Lutsen.
Emil Hall and Everett Tufts returned Monday from a four days’ fishing trip to Trout Lake. They caught 45 trout.
Hazel, baby daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.T. Roberts, is now able to be up again after being confined to her bed for eight days with pneumonia.
