A Minnesota Department of Natural Resources crew began drilling about a dozen holes, each to be some 20 feet deep, on the west shore of the Grand Marais harbor this week. The point of the drilling is to give the city, DNR and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers the data needed to evaluate the proposed safe harbor/ marina development for the harbor.

Two proposed Lutsen development projects took center stage Tuesday at the Cook County commissioners’ weekly meeting. Both were granted conditional use permits, allowing the developers to move forward with their plans. The projects are a 12-lot planned unit development known as Rita’s Grandview Ridge, and a 45-unit commercial planned unit development proposed by Lutsen Mountains on 27 acres to be known as the Ullr Mountain Vacation Homes.

Severe weather on Dec. 8 led to the cancellation of CCHS boys and girls basketball games. The weather also cancelled a girls’ game on Saturday.

The Cook County Airport Advisory Committee wants to be a full-fledged airport commission. They have recommended to the county board the appointment of nine people, one from each of the five voting districts, three selected by the present advisory committee, and one county board member. Their request is for authority to select and contract with a fixed base operator or airport manager who would carry out plans for airport development, promotion and maintenance.

Dec. 16, 1965

Western Electric Company technicians are now installing additional dial switching equipment and making rearrangements in the present equipment in Grand Marais, Tofte and Hovland. This is the latest step in the company’s $1,250,000 program to bring Direct Distance Dialing (DDD) to Grand Marais and other communities in northeastern Minnesota next summer. With DDD, telephone users will be able to dial many of their own long distance calls directly to millions of telephones throughout the United States and Canada.

Quite a number of spruce branches were left over from the village street decorating and are at Joe’s Standard Station. Anyone may have them for decorating by getting them at the station.

$50 reward for information on who killed a black and white Sheltie dog Friday night, Dec. 10, on Fourth Avenue West between Highway 61 and First Street.

Dec. 17, 1925

Jacob Pfister, of Lutsen, was in the village Tuesday selling fire extinguishers.

With all the daring and calm of seasoned bandits, two women walked into the First State Bank in Rennse, S.D., and held up the cashier, picked up $500 in silver and disappeared in a decrepit touring car. The people who saw the women agreed they were about 25 to 35 years old with black bobbed hair, dark eyes and a swarthy complexion.

A destructive fire struck the business section of Council Bluffs, Iowa, causing property damage estimated at more than $1 million in loss to buildings and several thousands of dollars in loss of stock in stores. The fire started in the basement of the Continental Furniture Company when a boiler exploded.
