Cook County commissioners said they would like some explanation as to why projected 2006 property taxes, particularly on homesteaded properties, have increased so dramatically – some as much as 75 percent. Commissioner Bruce Martinson said he has gotten more calls concerning the proposed taxes so far this year than in the previous two years combined. He also expressed concern that commercial property owners were being assessed an unfair portion of the tax burden.

The new Lutsen fire truck will be on view in Grand Marais this week to illustrate what features the township looked for in its purchase. “They can see a truck that is being used rather than a model,” said Treasurer John Groth.

Trooper Leah Erickson has been recently promoted to the rank of Trooper I. She has been assigned to the Grand Marais station since June 1995. Trooper Erickson, along with Trooper Joan Kunz, are the first female troopers assigned to the North Shore in the 66-year history of the State Patrol.

Over a dozen Cook County High School Magnet Arts students and five adult mentors will exhibit their work at the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery opening Dec. 1. As part of the school’s Magnet Arts program, students have mentored with local artists to concentrate on areas of interest in their art form. Guided by their mentors they have often worked together or on their own to create art.

Nov. 25, 1965

Hurrah! The little tame deer at Schroeder has survived the hunting season and is back to his old panhandling route to collect the apples and carrots put out for him. Everyone in the area worried as to his fate come hunting season.

The holiday lighting contest will be held again this year and the local Chamber of Commerce will provide the money prizes.

Robert Mattson volunteered for the U.S. Air Force several months ago and last Saturday went to Minneapolis to report for duty.

A group of young people from Duluth and Proctor planned to attend the Proctor- Vikings game here last Friday, but some of them were late because of the slippery roads.

90 Years Ago
Nov. 26, 1925

Jacob Pfister of Lutsen was in the village selling fire extinguishers.

Bob Campbell was the lucky man in the bowling alley last week. He won the fivepound box of chocolates with a score of 218.

Gertrude Carter collided with Lola Linnell’s head in basketball practice and took a bite out of her lip. Both head and lip are doing nicely.

Hilmar Backlund caught a mink. He is very proud of his prize. It took him just three weeks to catch it. Notice to game wardens: he has a license.

Mr. and Mrs. John Vallentine returned Sunday from their honeymoon trip.

Dave Canfield, who has been with the state forest service here all summer, left Saturday on the bus for Minneapolis.
