Pan-O-Gold delivered a GM step van to the Sheriff ’s Department on Nov. 10, to be used as a command and communications vehicle for the department and Search & Rescue. The used van was donated at the request of Emergency Management Director Nancy Koss. She said Search & Rescue is currently using the back of an old ambulance as a communications center.
A closed meeting of supervisors and the township attorney was held in Tofte Nov. 14 to discuss acquisition of the Birch Grove school building from Independent School District 166. Chair Paul James announced at the regular town meeting the following day that the township must either extend negotiations or start condemnation proceedings before Feb. 1. The school board has already agreed to extend the negotiating period and has responded to Tofte’s first offer.

Two working sessions of the courthouse and law enforcement center building task force have reduced the site choices to four, and estimated that per square foot costs are likely to average somewhere on the $90-$120 range.
Grand Marais has a new chief of police, Thomas Billings. The city council voted at a special meeting Nov. 15 to offer him the job, and the following day he accepted. Billings is a retired Minneapolis police officer who has worked in patrol, vice and narcotics duty.
Moose hunters had a very successful season in 1995. A total of 327 moose were taken by 379 parties in the state. In the northeastern portion of the state, 188 parties took 156 moose for an 83 percent success rate.

Notice: The Birch Terrace will be open seven days next week (including Monday) because of deer season.
Michael Denham of Tofte has been permanently assigned as a sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. Sentinels are selected from candidates in all units of the Army. Denham is only the fifth sentinel to be chosen from the state of Minnesota.
A birthday party at the Shoreline Saturday morning for Miss Lydia Baethke and Mrs. Henry Toftey caused a lot of fun for the participants.
Glenn Pedersen, who is a patient at Yonkers Memorial rehabilitation Center in Des Moines, Iowa, is now able to sit in a wheelchair. Mrs. Pedersen was with him while he had surgery, and she has now returned.

NOV. 19, 1925
Bud Lindzy is building a foundation for his new house on his farm in Colvill.
Ardine Gilbertson caught a silver gray fox in a trap last week. The animal had just two toes in the trap, and was not injured otherwise. It is worth several hundred dollars.
Victor Samskar ran into a telephone pole at Tofte yesterday morning bending his front axle and doing other minor injuries. Emil Hall was called to Tofte to fix it up.
John Fisher of Colvill was hit by an automobile driven by Albert Gilbertson Saturday night. The accident happened in Colvill after the dance in that town. Mr. Fisher was knocked out but came to in a short time. He was taken home, and the doctor summoned. His injuries are not considered serious.
