A couple who lives in Chisholm and has a cabin on the Gunflint Trail bought the Tip of the Trail for $701,000 in a “spirited” public auction Oct. 31. Three bidders vied for the property, with Michael and Sally Valentini winning with a bid $94,100 above the appraised value of $606,90. The other bidders were Debra Mark, who owns Seagull Outfitters, and Jeff Drew, who operated the resort when it was owned by the U.S. Forest Service.
The friendly and calm Pete James is the new director of Great Expectations Charter School and says he’s looking forward to applying his considerable management skills in a new setting. “My job is to make everyone else’s job easier,” James said last week. The charter school had been without a director for some time because, staff and board members say, they have been looking for the perfect candidate.

Four board members of the Cook County Grand Marais Joint Economic Development Authority and two representatives of the Lutsen Tofte Tourism Association met to work toward agreement on Superior National Golf Course management and application of funds related to golf course operations. They agreed that the two sides are close to mutual understanding and agreed to join forces and retain a lawyer to draft a management agreement that will serve the whole community for the next several years.
A regular meeting of the Grand Marais City Council was held Nov. 8, with council listening to opinions over the proposed snowmobile route from two area merchants. Both expressed concern over the negative effect the route would have on their businesses. The route directs snowmobilers into the downtown district, which opponents have said will interfere with pedestrians and questioned what will happen if there’s not enough snow to adequately cover the streets.

Hansen’s Store at Lutsen has had a close-out sale the past two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hansen have decided to go out of business after having owned and managed the store for the past 19 years. They took over the store which was formerly owned by Mr. Hansen’s father shortly after World War II. The store was built in 1928.
A car-truck accident on the Baptism River bridge last Monday afternoon took the life of a Finland airman and injured two others. The Minnesota Highway Patrol reported that the driver of the car apparently lost control of the vehicle and skidded into the path of a semi-trailer truck driven by an Ontario man, who was only slightly hurt.
Ollar Snevitts has been busy building a new dock at the public landing on the east end of West Bearskin.

Frank Cherry purchased a new player piano for his residence one day last week.
W.J. Forsythe is now landing pulpwood on the harbor front, it being hauled with trucks.
Work has been ongoing for a week on a new telephone line to Greenwood Lake. They are moving the old line over to the new road just completed. The new line will be finished about the 20th.
A five-month-old baby girl of Mr. and Mrs. William Drouillard died Sunday afternoon from stomach trouble.
The new warehouse and garage of the state forestry service has just been completed at the new state forestry headquarters northwest from Mrs. Schoen’s store. One part of the structure is being used for a temporary office. An office building will be erected some time in the future.
The new home of Fred Sjoberg is going up fast.
