The Autumn Migration Birding Festival sponsored by the North House Folk School and the Grand Marais Area Tourism Association brought more than 60 birders and guides to town last weekend for the fifth annual event. Very nice weather was a plus for the birders, but not so good for the birds. Recent stretches of warm weather may have impacted the movement of birds and caused the reduced numbers this year. The number of species sighted was only 78 compared to about 110 for past years. In addition, the actual number of birds sighted was fewer than in past years.
