A U.S. Forest Service prescribed burn of 3,800- plus acres of blowdown on Saucer Lake and at Gunflint Palisades was delayed this week because of 1.5 inches of rain that fell on Sunday and Monday at the top of the Gunflint Trail. The Forest Service is still planning to burn some brush and slash piles later this week.

In an effort to reduce the $13.9 million budget proposed for next year, the Cook County commissioners Tuesday scheduled a special session for Oct. 25. In the meantime, the commissioners will meet with the department heads to discuss ways to make cuts and more efficient use of their staffs.

Sept. 25, 1995

Grand Marais City Administrator Larry Johnson submitted his letter of resignation Sept. 20 at a meeting of the city council.

The 1995 visitor season is winding down for Grand Portage National Monument, and the reconstructed great hall, kitchen, canoe warehouse and stockade will close for the winter on Oct. 14. The monument enjoyed a busy summer and hosted a record number of visitors. Rendezvous Days, held annually in August, was a big success, with over 175 historically costumed participants and nearly 25 encampments taking part in the weekend celebration. The monument’s gift shop also experienced another record sales year.

Sept. 23, 1965

A big bull moose and Harold Moe’s car collided near Opsala, Ontario last week while the Moes were there on a fishing trip. The moose was killed and the car badly damaged, but luckily the Moes were not injured.

Mrs. Martha Crone walked home from the bay to her cabin one day last week and met a female wolf and her pups in the roadway. Evidently the den is back in the rocks of Horse Shoe Bay.

Will the person seen taking a pair of men’s corduroy slacks and wool underwear from the Midway Laundry please return them to the laundry and no charges will be filed and no questions asked.

Sept. 24, 1925

Mrs. Burgit of Pipestone entertained the high school last week by whistling. She imitated the different bird calls.

The Tourist Park opened June 22 and closed Sept. 25. During this time 2,007 cars registered. Number of people 8,037. Cash taken in, $891.75.

Miss Alice Lindskog entertained Miss Vivian and Mr. Castle Hussey at a duck dinner Tuesday evening.

Miss Christine Clinch has returned from an interesting canoe trip from Ely to Lake Kanippee.

P.E. Alm has a new summer cabin on East Bearskin Lake.
