At the Aug. 16 annual meeting attended by more than 40 people, Lutsen citizens voted to give $5,000 of township funds toward a $30,000 design project by the Center for Changing Landscapes in order to impact the town highway plan.
Lara Fortunato put Grand Marais on the map at National American Miss when she came in third in the National American Miss Teen Minnesota pageant in Bloomington earlier this month. This is the second year Lara has entered the state competition (last year she came in sixth), and she enjoyed both of them.

Mark Sandbo took over Aug. 7 as the new principal of Cook County High School. He told the school board at its Aug. 21 meeting, “I plan on being here for a long time. I’m not going to jump in with large changes. I’ll wait and see what’s working and what needs to be improved.”
The Grand Portage Reservation Tribal Council plans to adopt its own zoning ordinance soon, an ordinance they’ve been working on for several months. At a recent joint meeting with the Cook County Board of Commissioners, the two governments agreed to look into the concept of entering into an agreement to prevent dual zoning jurisdiction. The RTC would have the county suspend enforcement of its land use ordinance within the reservation. That would make the RTC ordinance the sole zoning jurisdiction on all lands in the reservation, regardless of ownership.

Tippy, a 9-year-old dog owned by the Glenn Nilsens in East Colvill was attacked and killed by a timber wolf or wolves last Wednesday night. The dog was killed about 50 feet from the front door of the house.
Lane Smith, 9, is at home again after his injuries were cared for at the local hospital following an accident Thursday evening. His younger brother Damon was with him but was not hurt. Lane has a fractured right arm and skull fracture. The boys’ parents are not sure what happened. It seems the boys were riding on Alan Pederson’s car and jumped off.

Emil Anderson of Colvill met with an accident Sunday morning which caused his death. He was after a bear which was killing sheep and committing other depredations. He fell over a log and the gun was accidentally discharged, the ball passing through his shoulder and severing an artery.
J.C. Murphy has purchased the three corner lots on Broadway and Wisconsin from C.O. Johnson and Chas. Ladd for a consideration of $2,200. He is now excavating for a new store.
Martin Jacobsen of Hovland ran his car in the ditch when coming to Grand Marais Tuesday afternoon. He attempted to pass a truck, the sun shining in his face so that he could not see the road at the critical moment and he got out too far. A broken wheel was the only damage.CelebrexTM
