10 Years Ago Aug. 19, 2005

Reports that the Colvill town hall might be sold brought out over two dozen residents of the East End community last Friday night. The general consensus after about an hour of discussion led by Commissioner Janice Hall was “let’s keep it.” The idea to sell the old white clapboard community club surfaced last month when the county board voted not to spend an estimated $4,000 to make the building usable. It needs a new furnace, repairs to crumbling concrete steps and other minor repairs.

Students and community members will soon have a new option for fitness. The Upper Shore Center for Athletics and Fitness, located in the former weight room at Cook County High School, is set to open its doors in mid- September. The center has received roughly one-third of its equipment and the rest is expected within the next three or four weeks.

20 Years Ago Aug. 21, 1995

A recent proposal made informally by county commissioner Gene Erickson to erect “Welcome to Cook County” signs at both ends of the county on Highway 61 brought a negative response from the Gunflint Trail Association. The board passed a motion Aug. 15 stating that they will not approve placing such signs. The Gunflint Trail Association contends that the signs would be unnecessary and a waste of money. The commissioners agreed.

Seventy-seven exhibitors entered 364 items in the adult open class at this year’s Cook County Fair, held Aug. 17 and 18 at the Community Center and 4-H building. Fair Board secretary-treasurer Eleanor Waha said, “It’s an average size fair, compared with recent ones. It’s still going strong.” Twenty-five school exhibitors participated, with 173 exhibits. Winners collected $144 in prizes.

50 Years Ago Aug. 19, 1965

A new sign has been made for the public library on the corner of First Avenue West and First Street, placed in a diagonal line so it is visible from both approaches.

The village for the first time is letting bids for a village marshal’s car. Previously the marshals have furnished their own car. There is some hope too that the village may try to get a new fire truck.

One of the cabins at Traveler’s Rest was damaged by fire Tuesday evening. A redecorating job will be required. Cause of the fire was not immediately determined.

90 Years Ago Aug. 20, 1925

Carl Sound last week caught a herring that weighed 3 pounds and 2 ounces.

John B. LeSage has purchased machinery which is now on the ground for a new laundry in the eastern part of the village. A building is being put into condition for housing the new business which will start operations Monday morning.

A sedan driven by Mrs. L.J. Dickinson of Superior overturned at Cascade yesterday, seriously injuring Mrs. M. Roe, who with her husband occupied the back seat. Mrs. Roe was taken to Dr. Hicks’s office and her wounds dressed and bad cuts sewed. A large piece of meat was torn from her leg and her head was badly cut and bruised.

Owners of lots in Maple Hill cemetery are requested to cut the grass from and around graves and thus help to beautify the grounds.
