Firefighters from states around the region were scrambling to put out a 960-acre fire near Alpine Lake at the top of the Gunflint Trail on Wednesday with no hope of snuffing out the flames easily. Incident commanders said it could take at least two weeks to put the fire out.
With classes beginning Sept. 6, ISD 166 is in the midst of preparing for the upcoming 2005-06 school year. Sports practices for volleyball, football and cross-country begin Aug. 15 and teacher workshops will be held Aug. 31 through Sept. 2. According to John Engelking, principal of the middle and high schools, there is an expected enrollment of 154 for middle school and 222 for high school.

Strong west winds last Thursday afternoon caused a forest fire to spread rapidly and forced an evacuation of upper Gunflint Trail residents and visitors from the Seagull and Saganaga areas. Two hundred evacuees have been registered at the Community Center in Grand Marais.
Grand Marais planning & zoning administrator Larry Johnson notified 13 city residents by letter that they have 15 days to remove junked vehicles from their properties, or face criminal prosecution. The persons notified were informed that if they believe they qualify for an exception under the ordinance, they need to contact the city office within 15 days.

A light check made by the local police department and state Highway Patrol Tuesday in Grand Marais found that 35 out of 135 vehicles had defective lights. Two drivers were issued citations for driver’s license violations.
Lola Steidl, former school librarian here, is spending a couple of weeks relaxing in Grand Marais. Her main interest while here is painting.
The Lions-sponsored Fisherman’s Picnic has come and gone, and despite a bit of rainy weather, folks had fun and seemed to enjoy the event as usual.

W.H. Bally has installed a new apparatus for shoeing mean horses.
Mrs. Chas. Duham of Grand Portage lost the end of one of her fingers Tuesday evening when she got it caught in the cog wheels of her wringer.
Saturday noon Andrew Shold’s 18-monthold boy crawled under his car and was run over when Mr. Shold started the machine. The wheels passed over the hips and abdomen. The child was taken to Duluth and examined with the X-ray which showed that the hip was broken. Mrs. Shold is in Duluth and the child is in St. Mary’s Hospital. It will recover.
The local telephone company is putting in the remaining three cables which will put the whole village on a metallic circuit one-party line.
