Two cars collided on Highway 61 in Croftville Saturday morning, fatally injuring one Grand Marais woman. This is the first traffic fatality in Cook County in 2005.

A four-acre wildfire off the Lima Mountain grade has been successfully contained. According to the Gunflint Ranger Station, the fire has not grown since it was called in on Sunday afternoon, July 24.

Father Mark Coen, 44, is the new priest at St. John’s Catholic Church in Grand Marais. He comes to the parish from Two Harbors/Silver Bay where he served for seven years. He is replacing Father Stephen White, who retired earlier this year.

Responding to requests, the Cook County commissioners decided July 25 that the time has come to re-name Squaw Lake, since that name has been recognized as pejorative or at best politically incorrect. The body of water will now be known as Lake Olga. Consideration for the historical connections between Olga Allen Erickson and members of her family to that particular lake led to the selection of the new name.

The 35th annual international sailboat race from Grand Marais to Thunder Bay was sailed July 15 with a fleet of 15 boats. The winning boat in Class A with corrected time of 18 hours, 59 minutes and 56 seconds was Pennycress, a C&C 37 from Thunder Bay.

July 29, 1965

A highway mishap early Sunday morning took the lives of two brothers who were hauling produce from California to Fort William. The accident happened near Cascade River when their huge semi-trailer left Highway 61 and plowed into the woods and caught fire. Officials believe that a front tire blowout may have been the cause of the truck going off the road.

A new high was reached in attendance at the Grand Marais Flower Show “Vacationland” last Friday afternoon and evening when 361 registered. There were 190 exhibits, of which 38 were roses.

U.S. Forest Service crews were fighting a stubborn lightning-set fire between Pine and Long lakes this week. The fire was spotted from a plane Sunday on a ridge which has a deep duff covering where the fire kept smoldering.

July 30, 1925

Iver Anderson returned to his work as night engineer at the light plant Monday. He has been laid up about six months with a broken leg.

Dr. and Mrs. T.M. Robertson of Coffeyville, Kansas are on their way to Grand Marais and will arrive in a few days if able to get through the tall corn which is reported to be overhanging the roads.

Notice: Dog taxes are due and must be paid. All dogs that the taxes are not paid on will be picked up. I will not go from house to house to collect them.
