Cook County schools will get the biggest boost in four years under the budget agreement approved by the Legislature last week. But it won’t solve all the money problems the school district faces, said Superintendent Chuck Futterer. “In general, it was a pretty good bill for education,” he said. “Our preliminary information from the regional office is that northern Minnesota did pretty well, considering that we haven’t had any increases in four years.”

At the Schroeder town meeting on July 12, Fire Chief Phil Bonin reported that the fire hall basement is still flooded and now green algae have taken up residence as well, creating slippery, slimy flooring. This presents a worsening situation that has gone on for some months, exacerbated by a clogged drain and not relieved by the sump pump.

July 24, 1995

The Cook and Lake county commissioners met jointly July 18 and agreed to combine the court administration functions of the two counties on a one-year trial basis. The idea has been discussed for several months, and it was finally decided that the prospect of one administrator serving both counties is timely.

Bob and Marti Marchino are the new owners of Clearwater Lodge.

The Cook County Board went along with Sheriff Dave Wirt’s recommendation to increase the regular jail boarding fee from $25 a day to $50 a day, and to eliminate the $6 a day fee for Sentence to Serve prisoners. The Huber Program daily boarding fee of $20 will remain unchanged.

July 22, 1965

A 500-pound moose was struck by Leslie Jandrt of Tofte on Highway 61 Tuesday as he was driving to work. Jandrt was driving a pickup truck. The truck hit the animal’s hind leg, breaking it, and throwing the truck into the ditch. Game wardens shot the animal and the meat is being disposed of through local stores.

The West End Garden Club held its annual flower show July 14 at the Birch Grove School, with over 200 guests viewing the show “Thru the Garden Gate.” The show was three weeks earlier than usual, but the flowers were beautiful.

Pine Lake has been treated with rotenone, being reclaimed for better fishing. The treatment was conducted July 14 and the waters will be toxic for from four to six weeks. The lake will be restocked as a stream trout lake according to the local game warden.

July 23, 1925

Mr. Britton has arrived in Grand Marais for a visit. He has added an extension to his car for camping purposes and camps where night or foul weather overtakes him.

Mr. and Mrs. John A. Blackwell and daughter Faith returned yesterday from a 10-day motor trip. They took their tent and camped along the way, staying at several tourist parks.

Miss Grace Kaercher, clerk of the state supreme court, and her sister were guests of Dr. Hicks on Sunday. They had been out for a lake trip around Isle Royale.
