At the June 21 town meeting, Lutsen supervisors gave the go-ahead for a locally built log pavilion for Grandview Park. The winning bid, $49,600 for a 24- by 40-foot red pine log pavilion, went to Mike Senty of Grand Marais. The bid did not include excavation – expected to cost an additional $15,000 – or painting, but does include the concrete slab. Construction will begin in August.
The Tofte Trek Walk/ Run has a new name this year. It’s now called the Jan Horak 10K Wilderness Walk/Run, but all hope the conditions at the July 4 race will be the same as in past years – hot and muddier than heck.

ISD 166 superintendent Don Langan met with the school board June 26 and told them that he had concerns about the strength of negative consequences for alleged juvenile offenders under school rules, when compared to the consequences imposed by the courts or the state high school league rules. Langan said that school rules are often more negative than what is meted out by the legal system. “The differential is problematic,” said Langan. “We may be sending the wrong message.”
The Cook County North Shore Care Center has received a few criticisms about the new fence being built around the front patio of the nursing home, according to administrator Diane Pearson. No surprise, she said, because she doesn’t think it’s too attractive either. “The calls about the fence have not been complimentary,” she said.

Boat tours on the harbor and along the shores of Lake Superior will be available here this summer as an added popular tourist attraction. The Julie Ann will be ready for passengers on Friday providing weather permits.
Marvin Deschampe came home last Thursday, surprising his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Deschampe of Grand Portage. He is a field engineer for Radio Corporation of America and has worked nine months in Turkey and the past 13 months in Spain.
The Don Ziesmers returned last week from a three-week vacation trip in their new camper.

July 9, 1925
The formal opening of the Lake Superior International Highway at Two Harbors on July 11 will be marked by an oldtime barbecue of two whole steers which will be served to the thousands who are expected to attend this most important event. The Lake Superior International Highway is that portion of State Trunk Highway No. 1 between Duluth and the Pigeon River, the Canadian boundary line, and is one of the most picturesque in the United States.
Paul Kadonce was arrested last week by the village marshal, charged with having liquor in his possession. He paid a fine of $30 and costs.
Swamper Cariboo, one of the Chippewa chiefs, an honorary title inherited from his brother David, died Friday morning. Swamper was a well-known full-blood Indian who had lived in Grand Marais a good many years. He was 53 years old.
