Cook County runners certainly turned out for Grandma’s Marathon this year – and they did very well. In all, 17 members of the Viking cross country team along with seven adults, most of whom are associated with the team, ran the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon last Saturday in Duluth with Reed Lehto leading the student group, finishing 42nd overall in a field of 4,827 runners.

It was another great year for the Summer Solstice Pageant as perfect weather, an enthusiastic audience, talented performers from Good Harbor Hill Players, and great music combined for an evening of fun and laughter at the North House Folk School to celebrate the beginning of summer. Christopher Hoglund played “Rabbit” and was the narrator of the show, which featured lots of children playing little owls, chasing mechanical mice across the stage.

Fire broke out in the Superior National Forest June 18 near Devilfish Lake in the Hovland area. Through June 22, as many as 20 other hot spots were located, the biggest being a 200-acre burn just south of Winchell Lake. Lightning was the probable source of each fire.

Responding to a request from Gunflint Trail fire chief George Carlson, the county commissioners authorized a grant of $3,500 and a loan of $3,500 for purchase of a Type 1 fire engine. The $7,000 bargain became available, and Carlson determined that it will meet the area’s needs, and will fit in the Gunflint fire hall, runs fine, and is completely equipped with all hoses, ladders and fittings.

Minnesota ranks 17th in the nation in the number of automobile graveyards, junkyards, scrap-metal heaps and similar eyesores which dot the main roads and streets, according to a compilation made by the Department of Commerce and released by the White House in Washington, D.C. The state-by-state survey was made as part of the president’s beautification program. Texas led the nation with 1,602 junkyards of all types; Minnesota has 408. Rhode Island had the fewest with 22.

Tuesday the North Shore mail bus, driven by Tom Savor, turned over near Little Marais. The tie rod broke, letting the front wheels turn each a different direction. The bus went over an embankment.

Mr. Savor had his back badly pinched which probably would have been serious and perhaps fatal had not a passenger who escaped uninjured got him out when he did.

No one was hurt seriously.

A government scow arrived in the harbor Tuesday and the crew is working on the breakwater.
