With an eye toward safety, Grand Marais city councilors voted May 25 to close Wisconsin Street to vehicular traffic, from end to end, during this year’s Fisherman’s Picnic. In the past, only select blocks of the street have been off-limits to vehicles during the weekend street festival. But organizers of the event have said in past years, and reiterated again last week, that the closure of the entire street would provide a safer atmosphere for both pedestrians and motorists.

A 77-year-old British Columbia man was rescued by the Coast Guard Memorial Day about a half-mile outside the Grand Marais harbor. The man, reputed to be an experienced sailor, had ventured outside the harbor in a seven-foot dinghy. The tiny boat overturned in the four-foot seas, and he managed to get on top of the boat, where he began calling for help. He was not wearing a life jacket, and the wind was blowing at 20 knots.

A serious high-speed car chase ensued May 31 when law enforcement officers from four separate agencies went after an Ontario motorist who crashed the border crossing at Grand Portage. In the end, the chase was halted by the simplest of devices – a stoplight. It was a nutty conclusion to a dangerous series of actions on the part of the suspect who allegedly broke international laws, disobeyed multiple traffic laws in both countries, and endangered the lives of law enforcers and others by his actions.
