Two canoe campers spent the night of May 12 in the local hospital after their canoe tipped in high winds on Gunflint Lake. The 26-year-old man and 27-year-old woman, both Japanese nationals and guests at Seagull Outfitters, were fortunate in that two volunteer firemen first on the scene recognized their hypothermic symptoms, knew what to do, and did it.
ISD 166 is working with the Economic Development Authority to possibly develop affordable housing on property the school district owns on the new Gunflint Trail. The 20-plus acres the district owns is in a prime location to develop low cost/affordable housing. District officials requested the EDA to look into the matter.

Local pilot John McClure spent a part of last Friday giving air rides to a group of visiting Russian students, many of whom had never flown in a small plane. Perfect weather improved the “bird’s eye” view.
North Shore Hospital and Care Center board president Dr. Larry Perry warned the board May 17, “it’s fine for the patients and residents that the nursing home is not crowded, but what it means is that the institution is not financially healthy.” The April 1995 profit/loss statement shows total net revenue down $69,809 from last year. Year-todate expenses have gone down by $104,674. The net excess this year of $34,864 contrasts sharply with last year’s net excess of $254,044.

One of the largest walleyes registered at the Midway Service weighing station was caught by Leroy Mesedahl of Duluth. His fish weighed 12 pounds and was caught Sunday in Seagull.
John Winterstrom and a friend have purchased Sheriff Emerson Morris’ plane and are getting it ready for flying it back to Alaska. They flew to Duluth in 5½ hours but it will take more than that going back. This is the first time since 1938 that Morris will be without a plane.
The Cook County Baseball League is looking for some livewire adult help for umpiring, coaching and the like.

The Colvill fire is under control – rains in the past week have greatly aided the fighters in their work.
Elis Smith of Schroeder is in the Two Harbors hospital where he has been since Friday suffering from the scratch of a cat which caused blood poisoning.
L.C. Cook of Devil Track Lake has been arrested and charged with operating a still. Constable Brouillette made the arrest.
Two sailors, mate and wheelsman, were swept from a boat at Split Rock Saturday and drowned. We were unable to learn their names.
The Brule Land & Outing Company is planning to build a 12-foot dam at the mouth of the Brule to serve a resort there which will be erected in the near future.
