Cook County Community Center Manager Diane Booth outlined an ambitious plan for expansion and better use of the facility at Tuesday’s weekly meeting of the county board. Although Booth cautioned the board that the plans are only in the preliminary “talking” stages, the commissioners gave a hearty approval and encouraged Booth to continue her efforts to help the proposal move forward.

By a 3-2 vote at their April 27 meeting, the Grand Marais city council put its final stamp of approval on an ordinance that will annex five outlying parcels into the city’s eastern corporate limits.

Drum beats echoed throughout the Grand Portage Trading Post last Saturday during grand opening ceremonies that both dedicated and celebrated the launching of another new business for the Grand Portage Band.

The Grand Marais city council approved the purchase of 20 new grills for the Recreation Park, and a new mower for the Gunflint Hills Golf Course. The actions mean expenditures of $2,285.06 for the grills, and $7,500 for the mower.

March came into Cook County without the usual lion’s roar of snow and wind. In fact, Cook County Soil & Water Conservation District rain gauge observer Bill Hughes of Pike Lake noted on March 1 “lamblike” temperatures of +10 and -10 for highs and lows. For accumulated precipitation, March didn’t get above 1 inch of rain/melted snow at any of the seven SWCD gauges.

May 13, 1965

Ruth A. Businger of Minneapolis has been engaged by the village library board to serve as librarian to succeed Mrs. Noel Knudson, who recently resigned.

A plane that refused to take off at the expected time crashed into the rocks near the Coast Guard station last Thursday afternoon. Considerable damage was done to the pontoons, propeller and other parts of the plane, but no one was injured.

Dick Bystrom has been added to the Grand Marais police force. John M. Blackwell, who has been village marshal the past several years, will now alternate with Bystrom on a time basis.

Michael Hussey, 5, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hussey, fell while climbing a tree Sunday and fractured an arm in two places.

May 21, 1925

Andrew Hagar of Duluth is finishing up the brick work on the Midway Service Station. Mrs. Hagar is in Grand Marais with him.

The flume at the high falls on the Pigeon River broke Tuesday and is being repaired, a halt in the driving of Hughes Brothers’ pulpwood being necessary.

Miss Blanche Bally caught a 20-pound trout at Loon Lake Sunday. Her reel and pole were badly damaged.

The Baptist denomination has purchased the three lots north of the Lundquist residence.

The fire burning in the Mountain Lake country on Canadian soil was reported to have crossed the boundary at the east end of Mountain Lake on May 19, and men from Grand Marais left on the morning of the 20th to hold the fire in check.
