Grand Marais councilors approved boundary changes last Wednesday that will increase the number of areas in which the city’s fire department will be asked to respond. The new areas in the fire zone are currently not served by any fire department, but recent and potential new development have created a need for the service.

The Cook County Sheriff ’s department has arrested two local residents for possession of methamphetamines.

Taconite pellet production for Cleveland- Cliffs Inc. overall is expected to go up by about a million tons in 2005, and efforts to get rail-vessel shipments through Taconite Harbor are looking better for start-up.

The new Power Macintosh computer at the public library has been busy since its recent donation by the Library Friends of Cook County. All segments of the community have welcomed its arrival. The computer is identical to the one used in the high school computer lab for students and community education classes.

The oft-delayed 1995 track season finally got under way for the CCHS Viking girls’ and boys’ track teams on April 25 with a triangular meet at Duluth East. The Vikes, low on numbers compared to their competitors, took a distant third place as a team. The Vikings’ golf team was also set to begin its first season with its first match last Saturday at Two Harbors. Most of the members barely had a chance to swing a club, beginning just three days before the contest. In fact, a number of players had to travel down to Silver Bay to qualify for the match, because there were no courses open in Cook County.

May 6, 1965

Mrs. Bruce Gordon was driving to school when the earthquake occurred in Seattle. She thought something was wrong with her car and stopped at the closest filling station. Arriving at school she found a pile of bricks in the cloak room where a chimney had fallen down. Some schools were closed from Thursday to Monday, she said.

While working in the woods last Friday, Duane Johnson had the misfortune of being hit by some logs. He was taken to the North Shore Hospital. He is feeling better at this writing and hopes to be home soon.

Art Eliasen is limping around as the result of dropping a pulp stick on his foot. Result, a broken toe.

May 14, 1925

Mrs. John Collins is selling fresh homemade maple syrup at $1 per quart.

On May 8, Dr. Hicks got word that a man was dead up at the 22 mile post. Frank Appel, the state game warden, was found lying in the rocks on a steep hill, dead. His forehead was struck by a flat stone and made it flat as a piece of board. The motorcycle was about 35 feet ahead of the body in the rocks. The cause of the accident was one flat tire that was found on the machine, which was likely the cause of the bike going into the rocks. No false play could be found, and no inquest was deemed necessary.

Ranger Outzen came in from the Four Mile District Sunday to take care of the office work and take action on fires while Rangers Legat and Mulligan are in the field.
