The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community has awarded a $1 million grant to the Grand Portage Band of Ojibwe for renovation of the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino, which was built in 1974. The first phase of the work will include the lodge’s lobby area; the second phase will include renovations to the casino itself.
Cliffs Erie LLC has agreed to pay $56,000 to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for alleged water quality permit and state rule violations at its Taconite Harbor pellet shipping facility. The company told the MPCA that leachate had leaked through a holding pond’s liner into a ditch that drains to Lake Superior.

The Cook County High School track team had a meet cancelled because of snow for the second time in two weeks. Both meets will be rescheduled, if transportation can be arranged. So far, the track team has had no competition on the season, so the athletes are anxious for an improvement in the weather.
Isle Royale National Park has announced a new two-year moratorium on the issuance of all new commercial use licenses. Commercial use license activities in the park include such services as guided fishing, diving, kayaking, sailing and backpacking. Park officials said the moratorium is necessary until the park’s new General Management Plan/ Environmental Impact Statement is completed. The moratorium does not affect past commercial operators who were issued licenses in 1994.

Mr. and Mrs. Gilferd Nelsen saw a great sight last Monday night – 14 ships in single file on Lake Superior.
A daytime fire last Wednesday about noon took the home of Mr. and Mrs. Danny Jones in Lutsen.
It is believed the fire started in the basement and swiftly made its way up the stairway. Nobody was home at the time.
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Wicklund of Minneapolis spent four days with the Glen Austins in Schroeder. They had hoped to do a little smelt fishing, but the cold spring defeated them.

The Grand Marais Bakery has put a new awning on its building.
J.H. Pinkerton was confined to his bed with the flu the past week. He is now able to be around again.
A large number of outside cars went through Grand Marais this week.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cherry were Duluth visitors last week. During their absence Godfrey Plante of Grand Portage ran the bakery shop.
Ed Toftey collided with a Studebaker Tuesday noon on the corner by the Village Hall. No one was hurt. Mr. Toftey was driving his Buick, the car being quite badly damaged.
