Harbor Friends, a new nonprofit that was organized to advocate for preserving the harbor and recreation park area as a “multi-use recreational, cultural, economic and environmental jewel” presented a proposal to renovate the existing marina to the Grand Marais City Council Wednesday.
A trailer formerly used to house a local methamphetamine lab will soon be reborn as a firefighting aid. Cook County Sheriff Mark Falk discussed the matter with the county board Tuesday and recommended that the Avenger Avalanche enclosed snowmobile trailer be given to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The agency will strip it down, clean it up, and outfit it with a portable sprinkler system for use in wildland fire suppression. The trailer was seized by the Sheriff ’s Department in August 2003 during investigation of a meth lab on County Road 7.

Doug and Katie Anderson are the new owners of the Dairy Queen in Grand Marais. They are well acquainted with the community, having been frequent visitors since they honeymooned here in 1967. The Andersons plan to continue the familiar pattern of Dairy Queen operation, staying open from mid-April through October.
Painters Ann Jenkins and Lynn Tofte admired each-other’s work and basked in the responses of viewers at the April 7 opening of their “Sticks & Stones” exhibit at the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery. Their work celebrates the beauty and strangeness of small things, and looks both inward and outward at the universal spirit of life.

New A-Team cheerleaders for the 1965- 66 school year have been chosen. They are Janet Warn, Diane Dunder, Nancy Howard, Diane Silver, Donna McKenzie, Sandra Leng and Lavona Saethre.
Starving deer have been tended to at the William Williamsens and at the Russell Oikaris. The Oikaris had three in their basement at one time on sugar, bread and water. Two of them are beginning to feel frisky but the third couldn’t make it and died on Tuesday.
A few of the ladies from the Hungry Jack area gathered at the Bunns’ home on Monday to help celebrate Mother Bunn’s birthday.

Jack Dewar came to town Tuesday from Loon Lake where he is building cabins.
Jess Gapen of Gateway Lodge at Hungry Jack Lake was in town the first of the week.
Brent Everson of Maple Hill has accepted a position with the Grand Marais Light & Power Company as night engineer.
The Hovland school house burned down yesterday morning about 8 o’clock. It is supposed that the fire started from an overheated stove.
Earl Savard, Tom Hussey and John and Kenneth Blackwell were fishing on Loon Lake Sunday. The fish would not bite.
