“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” a joint production of the Cook County High School and the Grand Marais Playhouse, opened at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts April 14. The play stars Phil Klobuchar, Cory Cochrane and Jason Fries.

The Cook County Sheriff ’s Office is investigating three separate incidents in which people were bitten and injured by dogs this week. A pit bull is in custody after biting two people and another dog last weekend in Croftville, and a black labcollie mix is being sought in connection with an April 5 incident at Lutsen Mountains in which a young child was bitten.

April 10, 1995

The county sheriff is investigating a rash of cabin burglaries. Three cabins on Tait Lake have been forcibly entered and burglarized. The cabins were ransacked and various items were taken, including liquor and silverware. Burglary of a second group of four cabins occurred on Pike Lake, also by prying open the doors. Stolen there were a microwave oven, telephone, champagne, televisions, VCR and stereo. All of the burglaries took place within the last week or two.

The Cook County- Grand Marais Joint Economic Development Authority announced that they will move their office to the Grand Marais municipal building when their current lease on rented space in the Norshor Building expires. Grand Marais city government offices are being remodeled to convert the former teen center into a council chamber, then install a partition in the present council room to make two additional offices.

April 8, 1965

Arthur O. Evans of Mineral Center died Tuesday at the North Shore Hospital at the age of 78. He had been ailing for some time. Mr. Evans homesteaded in Mineral Center in 1922 and has kept that as his home ever since. He worked as a mechanic in his own garage there for several years and did considerable snowshoe making. Before moving to Cook County he was a section foreman on the railroad in Nebraska.

Local game wardens report that 47 deer were killed by cars on highways in this area during the month of March. The animals have been coming down to the trunk highway in droves because of the deep snow inland where feed is hard to find. Four other deer were killed by dogs, who pounce on them after they bog down in snow.

A plane came down – right-side-up without mishap – on Devil Track Road while making a forced landing last week during a heavy snow shower. It was pushed into a neighbor’s yard in order to clear the road.

The tug and scow J.L. Whitnet and Limit, took their first load of gravel this season out of the Grand Marais harbor Wednesday.

Fred Sjoberg is remodeling his restaurant and is installing a soda fountain.
