The new map of Cook County is hot off the presses. The beautiful full-color map comes complete with photographs of North Shore landmarks and wildlife, a large road map of the entire county, township and village maps, a road index and a “did you know?” trivia section stuffed full of little-known facts about the county. The map is a first-of-itskind for the county; 16,000 have been printed.

The Cook County Sheriff ’s Office is seeking an adult man who, along with two others, broke into Ryden’s Border Store in Grand Portage sometime during the night of March 24. A large amount of cash, both Canadian and American currency, was taken from a locked cabinet.

The Cook County commissioners opened discussion with County Attorney Bill Hennessy and Sheriff Dave Wirt on the question of adopting a juvenile curfew ordinance. Wirt reminded the board that Grand Marais has a city ordinance, and it seems to be effective. Times mentioned for establishing a curfew were 11 p.m. for younger juveniles and midnight for older ones up through 17 years of age.

More than one-third of the winter snow fell in February according to reports by the Cook County Soil & Water Conservation District by all eight observers. As much as 25.5 inches fell in February. The average for this winter in snowfall was 63 inches, rivaling the winter low of 58 inches in 1984-85, said weather watcher Bill Hughes.

April 1, 1965

While Minneapolis was again staggering under another 10½ inches of snow Sunday, Grand Marais and surrounding area had a bare two inches of new snow. Nine inches was reported on the Sawbill Road and five or six on Maple Hill and beyond.

As far as the deer are concerned, spring is here. They are down in droves especially habiting the feeding yards of the Russell Oikaris, where 60 were counted at one time. The deer are quite tame.

Mrs. Arnold Jones is spending two weeks in Wheatridge, Colorado visiting her daughter Lorri.

April 9, 1925

April 2, Morris Olson purchased the Tourist Garage at Two Harbors from Arthur LaForce. Alfred Sonju was secured from Finland to act as manager. Mr. Sonju is well known in Lake and Cook counties having worked for the state the past five years.

The gas boat Dagmar of Two Harbors arrived in Grand Marais Wednesday morning with a boat in tow. They were on their way to Isle Royale but on account of ice the Dagmar returned to Two Harbors, the other boat remaining here.

Ellwood Johnson is taking Tom Florman’s place at the Motor Inn. The genial Tom is spending his vacation in Florida.

Dave Lind sold a Chevrolet touring car to Rose Duke.
