Residents of the city’s northwest section filled council chambers last Wednesday to voice their opposition to a proposal that could create a new neighborhood and cost $1.6 million. Most of that cost would be borne by the property owners, who would be assessed for the improvements that include public water and sewer line extension, construction of streets, and possibly curb and sidewalk.

The Safe Harbor Advisory Committee will recommend a site for a marina to the Grand Marais City Council when the council meets next month. Ten of the 16 committee members said they were in favor of locating a harbor/ marina in the southwest corner of the harbor near the old power plant.

A car stolen from a garage in Grand Marais was used in an armed robbery of a convenience store in Newport nearly a week later. Newport police arrested 19-year-old Brian John Larsen shortly after the robbery and he was allegedly in possession of stolen goods, the car and the keys which the owner thought she had lost.

The ISD 166 school board had a lengthy debate about low participation and possible alternative sports activities in future years. The discussion touched on several issues related to student activities, what the school can offer, and how the activities can be funded. In particular, the track program is being scrutinized, with the possibility that this may be its last year.

Upwards of 1,200 to 1,500 people spread out upon Clearwater Lake last Sunday, armed with ice augers, lines and bait – and lunch baskets – to enjoy the 8th annual Lions Trout Derby. The trout were not too cooperative, however 788 trout were registered and some 25 more were believed caught. None were bigger than 1 pound, 15 ounces.

There will be work for about 300 building tradesmen at Taconite Harbor in the next two years during the recently announced Erie Mining Co. expansion program. There will be employment for 600 more at Hoyt Lakes.

The Izaak Walton League met at the courthouse last Thursday evening for the purpose of electing officers and completing the organization of the local chapter. This organization is for the propagation and conservation of wildlife and forest, and everyone in this county should be interested in this work.

Carl Berg is suffering from a sore foot which he cut one day last week in the woods while cutting poles.

Anson Blackwell was taken to Duluth on Monday following an attack of appendicitis on Saturday. He was taken to St. Mary’s hospital and underwent an operation Tuesday.

Clarence Roed of Duluth has been spending a few weeks of his winter vacation at the home of Chris Holte. During the summer months he is employed on one of the ore and grain boats out of Duluth.
