At its annual meeting on Tuesday, the Township of Tofte voted unanimously to empower the supervisors to negotiate acquisition of the Birch Grove Center building. If successful, the purchase agreement will be presented at an annual or special township meeting for voter approval.

The Grand Portage Trading Post is open – and is it ever grand. The 13,000-square-foot building has lofty beamed ceilings and tile floors and houses an expanded grocery store, the U.S. Post Office, a soon-to-be-opened gift shop, a Hot Stuff fast food restaurant and bakery, and a 43-slot casino.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has charged two men with having 106 sunfish over the limit. When asked why they went so far overlimit, the anglers both reportedly said once they got started, “they could not stop…. the fishing was just too good.”

March 13, 1995

A log house on Maple Hill was destroyed by fire of unknown origin March 4. No one was injured in the blaze.

The Grand Marais City Council voted March 8 to suspend parks director Frank Georg without pay for two weeks. The disciplinary action was necessary, they concluded, because Georg had made unauthorized purchases of computer equipment for the department’s campground office. Georg had acknowledged that he made serious errors of judgment, and said at a March 6 park board meeting that he feels guilty, embarrassed . There was never any question raised about criminal or dishonest intent; development of a computerized reservation system for the campground had been discussed for more than a year, and the need for adding equipment was apparent.

March 11, 1965

A group of Lutsen people have decided that a part-time veterinary in the area is a must. So they arranged with a Duluth vet to make trips on certain days to the Lutsen town hall where pet owners may bring their dogs and cats for shots and other treatment.

A one-ton boulder crashed down from Silver Creek Cliff Sunday striking the front wheel of the mail truck being driven by Russell Ege Jr. of Little Marais. The driver was not injured but the truck was spun around and pushed up against the guard rail on the south side. There’s a 100-foot drop to the lake beyond! May be a good idea, he said, to “Watch for falling rocks!”

Fireplaces and other means of heating came into use last week when the REA power lines took a lacing from the sleet storm, cutting off power for over 70 hours.

March 19, 1925

Elmer Gilbertsen left here Tuesday from Duluth where he will drive a truck for the North Shore Fish and Freight Company.

John A. McCartey of Cloquet was arrested Monday for drunk and disorderly conduct. He was fined $20.

One of the tank trucks of the White Eagle Oil Company of Duluth made a trip to Grand Marais last week supplying the gas stations along the road. This is the first tank to come to this village.

Arthur Milton, chief mechanic of the Two Harbors shop of the Minnesota Highway Department, was in town Wednesday. He towed up a state patrol truck that will be overhauled by the local highway mechanics.
