Dog owners whose pets wind up at the pound will soon be paying more to bail out their animals under the terms of a new ordinance approved by city council last Wednesday. Council approved a new service contract, and okayed the first reading of the new fee structure. The new fees will become effective when an agreement between the Animal Advocates and the city detailing the payment process is finalized, along with approval of the second reading.
The Cook County Board of Commissioners voted to disburse some of the $213,489 available through the County Park and Recreation Fund. Eligible projects include development of trails, picnic shelters, public boat accesses and support facilities such as restrooms, park roads, trailheads and utilities.

The Grand Marais City Council heard the first reading of a proposed new “City of Grand Marais Tree Ordinance” at its regular meeting Feb. 22. The council passed the first reading with a unanimous vote. The adoption of the ordinance will be a first step leading up to applying to become a “Tree City USA.” Such a designation would make the city eligible for funds that promote tree planting and plant landscaping within the city limits.
Cook County commissioners assigned construction manager M.A. Mortenson the task of looking into six alternative sites for a new jail and law enforcement center. In addition to the present location, which the commissioners have advocated as part of their proposed courthouse expansion plan, five other potential locations will be seriously looked at.

March literally “slid” onto the calendar Monday on one of the worst sleet and ice storms ever to encompass this area. At least two people were taken to the hospital as a result of the ice, and many others took tumbles or had car problems. Power failure hit the REA lines countywide, and phone service was disrupted to Grand Portage. The west end of the county was hit hardest, since trees and power lines became more heavily encrusted there. Icing prevented survey of lines by planes, and going was rough even for snowmobiles. One lady in Tofte reported she cooked her breakfast with a blowtorch!
A group of interested persons met Feb. 24 at the East Bay Hotel to form a ski racing club, its primary purpose to assist competitive skiers and aid in the operation of ski races and meets. The new club is casting about for a name and will welcome suggestions.
