Cook County Athletic Director Lyle Anderson had been trying to get involved in the Polar League Conference almost since the decision to break up the Lake Superior Conference was made. Many area schools considered CCHS too far away or too small to include in their schedules, and without a conference, finding willing competition was a problem that kept Anderson scrambling.
Both Cook County and Silver Bay told the Polar League they would be open to “innovative scheduling” in order to make travel time more palatable for other schools. According to Anderson, that means the conference will be trying to set up Friday and Saturday contests and to avoid playing games on school nights. There has also been some discussion of playing two games in two days and spending the night with members of the other team.

The legislation also allows the county to provide up to $250,000 in operating funds to the hospital in 1989 while the district is being set up. The go-ahead on the new building was given last Sunday at a special meeting when the congregation voted almost unanimously that the work be started at an estimated cost of upwards of $85,000. The figure has since been pared to about $82,400. • The burnt cork has disappeared from the faces of the “darkies” of Burnt Cork and Melody, a minstrel sponsored by the Grand Marais Lions Club, directed by Harold Ikola and given two nights last week.
