The Middle School Student Council will host a pet food drive through March 10. Pet food and supplies gathered will be donated to Animal Advocates.

Lutsen Township Supervisor Brad Ludlow is working on plan layouts for the park pavilion and will have two quotes next month – one for a log building, the other a timber frame. Later in the spring he will look for playground equipment that is “aesthetically pleasing,” and the township will apply for money from the county Recreational Fund.

Grandma’s Marathon reached its original field limit of 9,000 registered participants, but in an effort to allow additional runners an opportunity to run the 26.2-mile race, organizers have decided to accept 300 more applicants.

State Rep. Tom Bakk has introduced legislation to create a “youth deer license” that would allow residents under 16 to take deer with firearms for only $5, instead of $22. Children who choose to hunt under this license would not be issued a tag but could take a deer which must be promptly tagged by a licensed hunter in the minor’s party.

The Cook County commissioners are taking a cautious approach to the question of whether to combine the court administrator job with Lake County. A Sixth District court administrative study has recommended consideration of the change, and the Lake County board is looking with favor on a one-year trial of a two-county administrator.

Feb. 25, 1965

Sheldon Hoaglum had the horrible experience of falling through a hole on Trout Lake that was hidden by skim ice and snow last Saturday. He was walking along when all of a sudden he pitched forward into the water. A nearby fisherman pulled him to safety.

An artmobile will be sponsored by the West End Parent-Teachers Association at Birch Grove School in Tofte. It is a traveling art museum which had a self-contained gallery of valuable paintings, sculpture and decorative art compiled by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

W.E. Funk of Lutsen and George Wegstein of Tofte have large herds of deer coming to their feeding places this winter because of the deep snow. Mr. Funk said he had at least 35 and Mr. Wegstein had even more.

March 5, 1925

Jack Hirsch of Grand Portage, who has been in St. Luke’s hospital in Duluth for the past month where he underwent an operation for a serious case of gall stones, has about fully recovered and is expected home in two weeks.

The basketball game Friday night, high school girls vs. village girls, ended with a score of 20-14 in favor of the village girls.

The U.S. Forest Service has ordered an 80-foot steel lookout tower with a glass enclosed cab for the Four Mile District. Also, a new telephone line will be constructed between Grand Marais and the East Bearskin ranger station this spring.
