Although the Cook County school board and the Birch Grove Foundation are interested in coming to a mutual agreement about leasing the Birch Grove Community Center for use by the new West End charter school, it will take some negotiating before a deal is finalized. “We want to get going. We want to work with the board,” Skip Lamb told the school board at its meeting on Feb. 14. Lamb is on the site committee for the charter school, which is set to open next fall.

More than 150 people crowded into the Harbor Light on Saturday night for Sheriff Dave Wirt’s retirement party. The party featured lots of laughter, some tears and plenty of recognition that spanned the country and crossed the border.

The belt-tightening being requested by the new Congress has reached Cook County. In its fiscal year budget for 1996, the U.S. Coast Guard proposed to streamline its operation by closing 41 stations, including the North Superior Station in Grand Marais. According to the Coast Guard, service along the North Shore can be provided by the Duluth station because of its high-tech boats and helicopters.

Residents in Cook County will soon be able to cruise the information superhighway from a computer terminal in their local Extension Service office, thanks to a $425,000 grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. The pilot project, called Access Minnesota, will provide direct connection to the Internet, a worldwide system of interconnected computer networks linking governments, universities, libraries and the private sector. Internet users can obtain massive amounts of information from sources around the world at the press of a computer key.

Feb. 18, 1965

The Cobblestone Station is having an addition built to the garage building. This will be a 40-foot by 30-foot space built of block and beams. The open beam construction will house the new car show area and office.

Research workers at the University of Pennsylvania have recently come up with a new chemical which is claimed to be practically “miraculous” in the control of rats. This new chemical known as “Raticate” is basically a derivative of one of the bromide salts. The miraculous part of this material is that it is reputed to kill rats with one dose and yet it is so specific to the rat that other animals can eat the material without danger. This is indeed a wonderful discovery.

90 Years Ago
Feb. 26, 1925

Four dogs arrived Tuesday on the mail bus from St. Paul for the Game and Fish Department.

Dan Blande was arrested Saturday afternoon on a charge of drunkenness. He appeared before Justice Andrew Larson Monday morning and was given the limit sentence of 90 days in the county jail, sentence being suspended providing Blande leave town immediately and not to return. He promised to leave town.

The moving picture show given Tuesday night by the Catholic Ladies’ Aid was well attended. They cleared about $25 above expenses.

Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Roberts were surprised on their fifth wedding anniversary Sunday by relatives. They were presented with a rocking chair.

W.E. Henderson, manager of the Western Electric Co. of Minneapolis, was in town Wednesday going over some of the future telephone developments of this district.
