The new year brought a new look to the Boreal Access home page. The old, cozy – some would say “kitschy” – Boreal page is gone. In its place a cool – some would say “Brrrrrr, cold” – blue page. The folks who run the Boreal Web site did get a few calls protesting the demise of the old page. But in the main, Boreal customers like what they see and more importantly, what the page offers.
The Cook County commissioners spent most of their meeting time Tuesday wrestling with zoning ordinance issues that presented themselves during the course of three public hearings. Although the board unanimously approved an amendment to the county zoning ordinance that limits variances to three years, the other two topics were rescheduled following lengthy discussions in an effort to gather more information and clear up confusion.

Eighty-seven skiers competed in the Sawtooth Challenge, a classical-style race covering 18 kilometers over the Gunflint Hills Golf Course and Pincushion Mountain.
Lake shore property owner associations in Cook County have joined together to form the Cook County Coalition of Lake Associations. The coalition is dedicated to preserving, protecting and enhancing the quality of life on and adjacent to the lakes, rivers and streams within the county. The coalition consists of five lake associations with a combined representation of more than 500 property owners. The coalition has been officially chartered by the state of Minnesota as a nonprofit corporation.

A Grand Portage trailer house belonging to Mr. and Mrs. John Kozlowski and son Teddy burned Sunday morning while the family was in Grand Marais. The fire was quite bad before it was noticed, and a locked door prevented anyone from saving any of the contents.
“Sunnydale” is no more. The house near Onion River burned to the ground last Saturday evening. Only the foundation and the tall chimney remain as reminders of the past. The cause of the fire was not determined. The garage and playhouse, as well as the surrounding trees, were not damaged.
Jim Greco has had a moose tiptoeing through his back yard recently. It was just 10 feet away from their cabin at one point!

Erick Johnson is overhauling one of the state trucks at the Midway garage.
George Moses came in Wednesday from Kimo Lake where he is building a cottage.
Two engineers from the Minnesota Power & Light Company were in the county the first of the week. They were investigating the streams along the shore looking for water power.
Hilbert Jones of Good Harbor Hill broke one of the bones in his right arm Monday morning while cranking a Ford car.
George Zimmerman turned over with his Ford sedan Friday noon near Chippewa village. The car was badly damaged, but no one was hurt. It was towed in to the Motor Inn garage Sunday and will be taken to Duluth where the body will be repaired.
