The Cook County commissioners voted Tuesday to sign a “master contract” with the Minnesota Department of Transportation which will allow the county to be reimbursed for any emergency repair work it does on Highway 61. By signing the contract, the county is not obligating itself to do any work. Rather, the signed contract simply ensures that the county will be reimbursed by the state if it chooses to perform a repair project on the statemaintained trunk highway.
Perfect conditions and perfect weather made for an outstanding day at the 21st annual International Sawtooth Cross-Country ski races on Sunday. More than 100 racers turned up for the classic and freestyle races – with everyone from elementary school students to seniors participating in the fun.

Nine citizens were appointed by the Grand Marais city council to serve on a design review task force. The group will work with the city’s planning commission to study the question of whether a permanent design review board is needed, and make a recommendation to council.
On a 3-2 split vote, the Cook County commissioners approved the recommendation of Sheriff Dave Wirt to replace one vehicle in the department’s fleet with a 1995 Chevrolet four-door sedan at a cost of $17,150. The cost was included in the Sheriff ’s department budget.

Eight hundred and sixty-three Canadian moose were brought through the Grand Portage port of entry at Pigeon River bridge during the Canadian open season just ended. Last year the count was 788.
Walter and Don Thompson, brothers, took their snowmobile to the top of Eagle Mountain Wednesday, Jan. 6, and claim to be the first to reach the highest point in Minnesota by snowmobile. The jaunt was not too difficult, since a survey trail had been made by the Forestry men. It took them about two hours.
William Salo caught a 16- and 17½-pound lake trout in a lake on the Gunflint Trail last week. He used his snowmobile to go to the lake alone. Salo reported that the ice was only six inches deep and there was a foot and a half of water on the ice. The snow was two feet deep.

C.O. Backlund caught a large wolf Saturday north of Rosebush.
The unusually heavy southwest wind Tuesday night blew in one of the large plate glass windows in the J.T. Joynes dry goods store.
Mr. H.Griffith, salesman for Lose Wiles Biscuit Company of Duluth, was in town calling on his customers last Friday.
