The chairman of the Safe Harbor Advisory Committee told Grand Marais city councilors Tuesday that the group’s preferred option for the siting of a safe harbor has been rejected by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Dick Powell said the unexpected news effectively sends the process back to the drawing board, and it is likely another series of meetings and planning sessions will be necessary to come up with an alternative recommendation.

Schroeder town supervisors voted to allow inspection of the town hall as a possible site for a proposed West End charter school at the Dec. 14 township board meeting. It was noted that the previous building on the present town hall site did serve as a school before Birch Grove was built.

Dec. 26, 1994

Cook County has received a $96,101 grant from the Minnesota Board of Government Innovation and Cooperation to complete phase 2 of the countywide Enhanced 911 system. The county’s application was chosen from among 92 requests that totaled $6 million.

Retiring Cook County Sheriff John Lyght received the Minnesota State Sheriffs Association award Dec. 9 in appreciation for 22 years of dedicated service to law enforcement.

Margaret and Roy Rasmussen have taught and coached in the Cook County schools since the late 1960s, and at the close of the current school year next June they’ll begin the pleasures of retirement. The school board accepted their resignations Dec. 12, and officially wished both a happy retirement.

Dec. 24, 1964

Christmas carol recordings are being heard by means of an amplifier from the First Congregational Church again during the holiday season. An outdoor setting of the nativity scene is flood-lighted in front of the church. The papier mache figures were made by Mrs. Eleanor MacKenzie.

Mr. and Mrs. Clifford James are driving out of the snow into the sunshine to spend Christmas in Florida.

The Christmas program by the junior and senior choirs was one nobody should have missed. The singing was beautiful. The songs were very inspiring and showed a great deal of practice. The junior choir did exceptionally well and could compete with any child’s choir appearing on TV.

90 Years Ago
Jan. 1, 1925

Mr. and Mrs. Chas. J. Johnson entertained their relatives of Grand Marais on Christmas Day at dinner. The table was set in the large living room and covers were laid for 28.

Alex McBean of Duluth is spending the winter at St. Petersburg, Florida, and we acknowledge receipt of a beautiful folder with views of that wonderful city. The winter population is now 100,000.

Anson Blackwell is confined to his home with an attack of appendicitis.

Thomas Carter returned home last week from Milwaukee, where he is enrolled as a student in electrical engineering.

Tom Florman returned Sunday from Minneapolis, where he spent Christmas with his mother. He made the trip in his coupe.
