Grand Marais is facing once again its annual problem about snowmobilers invading people’s lawns and endangering children at play. The perception is that the violations are committed by only a small portion of the snowmobiling population, but that the nuisance is really bad, and the danger is real. Work is continuing this year on designating routes into the city that will minimize the problems for residents but still allow snowmobilers access to fuel stops and other businesses.

The Grand Marais city council authorized formation of a task force which will make a study of the need for citywide design review regulations and establishment of a design review board. The task force will be made up of the five members of the city’s planning and zoning commission, plus 10 more Grand Marais residents who represent a broad base of community opinions.

A commercial fish house owned by Lawrence Larsen at Croftville burned to the ground Tuesday night, a total loss, with loss also of considerable equipment. The fire started of unknown cause about 7:30 p.m. during a heavy northeast wind and blizzard conditions. A cabin cruiser also burned. This is quite a loss to the Larsens – Mr. Larsen has seven nets in the lake now and has no skiff with which to attend them.

The village ice skating rink, located in the Tourist Park, is now open under supervision during posted hours. If the rink lights are not on in the evenings, the rink is closed. Parents and children are asked to please see that dogs do not accompany skaters.

Last Friday afternoon and evening the Grand Marais school held appropriate dedication exercises. The afternoon was taken up with exercises by the children, a few words from the president of the school board and an address by Superintendent F.A. Andert. At night Roy Flaaten and four other able musicians dispensed sweet music, beginning the program with an overture followed by a march. Miss Kathryn Gardiner, a very talented player, demonstrated her skill in two piano solos, the second one being in response to a hearty encore. Miss Gardiner is a pianist of recognizable ability not only among Duluth musicians, but in many parts of the United States.

Sam Zimmerman Jr. returned Tuesday from Duluth with a new Graham truck. He traded his old one in on it.
