Two more men received jail time and additional fines for driving off-road vehicles in a state forest last year and heavily damaging wetlands. Each was fined $995, placed on one year of probation and sentenced to 20 days in jail. Their sentences were stayed for 60 additional days. The fines were in addition to the $1,222 civil penalty and restitution that was already issued last September.

Grand Marais city councilors voted last Wednesday to eliminate all 78 boulders from the downtown streetscape project and to use the $3,900 in savings to help pay for new sidewalks that were added to the original plan. The boulders were to be placed at various spots along the new sidewalks and on the bump-outs at key intersections in the interest of public safety and aesthetics.

Oct. 24, 1994

Cook County commissioners agreed to support a Schroeder Township resolution requesting the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources specify a public walkway to the Sugar Loaf beach and scientific and natural area. The town board made the request on behalf of residents and visitors, in order to retain public access to the scenic area on the Lake Superior shoreline.

Casey Gwash, flute, Noah Waterhouse, trombone, and Michael Wirt, tuba, were chosen to participate in the 27th annual UMD Junior High Honor Band Festival Nov. 3 at the University of Minnesota’s Duluth campus. They were chosen from a field of over 400 outstanding junior high musicians from 55 schools in the northern half of Minnesota.

Oct. 22, 1964

Philip Hedstrom went to Duluth Saturday to get his son, Stanley. He had been hurt in Friday’s football game, and had spent the night in a Duluth hospital because of a dislocated shoulder. He is back at school, but off activities.

Ed Kluck is at the Carlton Rest Home. He is anxiously awaiting the completion of the local nursing home here.

Mrs. Olia Anderson of Croftville will be 81 on Oct. 29. Her friends should feel welcome to visit her any time.

Oct. 23, 1924

Two drunks paid fines Monday. Case of State vs. Anderson for alleged escaping from marshal while under arrest will come up for hearing on Nov. 5. It will be a jury trial.

H.N. Helly, aged 44, of Wells, Minnesota, died at 10 p.m. Saturday on his way to the Two Harbors hospital, of injuries received when his car turned over 1½ miles from Cascade. Another passenger was also quite seriously injured. Mr. Helly left the partridge hunting party and hunted alone, but arranged to be picked up at night. After getting in the car, it went but a short distance before it skidded and turned over twice, landing right-side up.
