The Birch Grove Foundation made the announcement last week – its application to found a kindergarten through fifth-grade charter school in Tofte has been approved by the State Department of Education. The charter school, which the foundation plans to open in the fall of 2005, has received two sponsors: the Minnesota Department of Education and Volunteers of America.

Cook County Sheriff Dave Wirt announced that he will retire Jan. 31, 2005, midway through his third term as the county’s top law enforcement officer. The news came as a surprise to the county commissioners, who didn’t have the item listed on their weekly agenda. Wirt, who entered the room near the end of the meeting, said he wanted to give the board ample time to find a suitable successor. The board has 17 weeks to complete that search.

Oct. 3, 1994

Fire struck in Grand Marais a week ago Sunday when the laundry and dairy supply burned. The blaze caused in excess of $100,000 in damage and the insurance isn’t enough to cover all of it, said owner Pete Gresczyk.

The fledgling Homestead Housing Cooperative of Grand Marais has taken another step forward in its private development of residentowned congregate housing planned for a location on the west side of Grand Marais. The board of directors met last Tuesday at City Hall to review a proposed request to the city council for a zoning variance and for vacating road and alley rights of way to make way for the project. The property lies adjacent to what would be Second Street and 11th Avenue West.

Oct. 1, 1964

Sheriff Emerson Morris reported that between $400 and $500 worth of items were taken in a break-in at the W.H. Lee cabin and that two Navy men from Tofte were apprehended and brought before District Judge Donald Odden in in Duluth. The boys were allowed to continue in their Navy service, however they will have to appear in District Court here.

The colored leaves are almost a thing of the past, what with rains, hard winds and frosts of the past week. They weren’t quite as bright and beautiful as last year’s but the mountain ash trees with their brilliant berries in great profusion and the cedar trees covered with their golden cones are worth looking at.

Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Wethern of Everett, Washington, arrived Monday for an extended stay. It is 18 years since they were last here.

Oct. 2, 1924

The Lake Shore Telephone Company has erected an all-metallic circuit long distance telephone line from this village to Little Marais. This will be a clear circuit of 47 miles.

Somebody tried to break into the Dr. Robertson summer home on Sunday at 1:30 a.m. Marshal Brouillette heard the noise, and as he approached the house he saw two men run. He shot four shots at them and shot to kill. But it was dark and he was unable to see clearly or follow them.

A boy was killed at Temperance River Sunday. He was standing on the bridge and after the front of the car had passed, he stepped back and struck the side of the car, being knocked against the bridge and fracturing his skull. He was taken to Two Harbors and died in the hospital.
