The 13th annual Bayou Boogie was held in Grand Portage last weekend. Mary Ann Gagnon, general manager of the casino, said attendance records were broken this year. “We set records all over the place out there – in the casino, in the restaurant, in the food tent,” she said. People came from as far away as Michigan to dance, eat Cajun food and just have a great time.
Residents of Pike Lake Road reported hearing “what sounded like four-wheelers tearing around” and then a crash around 2 a.m. Sept. 4 and called law enforcement. When officers and medical help arrived, they found a truck rolled over on County Road 45 just past Murmur Creek Road. The 25-year-old driver apparently lost control and hit a tree.

A 19-year-old Kekebeka Falls, Ontario resident was arraigned in district court in Grand Marais Sept. 8 on two separate charges. He was charged with felony theft for taking a bicycle in Grand Marais, and is facing a Canadian armed robbery charge. Canada wants him extradited to face charges for the robbery in Thunder Bay. The suspect has a record of prior arrests.
Thanks to the good will and hard work of a few people, Sawtooth Elementary School now has a brand-new trophy case to show off the hardware it earns for contests and athletic events.
The Grand Marais City Council has approved the appointment of Pat Hennessy as manager of the municipal liquor store. He will take over the operation Oct. 24, replacing retiring manager John Baumann. Hennessy, previously employed in the county Auditor- Treasurer’s Office, was selected from a field of nearly 40 applicants.

A car came down the Gunflint Trail Monday, pitched across Highway 61, and landed against the concrete block building north of Scott’s Shop, injuring two children and unnerving the driver, Mrs. Norman Pederson. She said something went wrong with the brakes as she approached the highway. Ironically, Mrs. Pederson had just returned from an 1,100- mile trip to St. Ignace, Michigan without incident! She was bringing washing to the laundry when the accident happened. This is one of several such accidents that have happened at this point by other vehicles.
Tommy Somnis Jr. of Tofte had the misfortune of running a stick in his eye. He was a patient at the local hospital for a few days and will require further medical treatment.

The four cars that drove by the village marshal’s house last Sunday morning causing a disturbance, are warned by the marshal that the next time it happens they will be arrested.
The National Camp for Girl Scout Officers at East Bearskin Lake closed on Sept. 1 after a most successful two weeks of camping. The leaders are most enthusiastic about their camping and the Cook County lakes and canoeing trips. In all, seven states were represented.
Orville Lindzy is recovering from a badly cut foot.
S.W. Ficklin has put windows and a door in his fruit store and lunch stand. A counter has also been built on the inside.
Miss Rose Murphy has returned from camping at Hungry Jack Lake. She spent about all of her summer vacation there. Several of the younger members of the family were with her.
