After more than nine hours, negotiators for the teacher’s union and the school district came to a tentative agreement on a teacher’s contract on Monday. Representatives from ISD 166 and the Cook County Education Association said they were relieved the agreement had finally been reached, but they said there is much more work to be done before the contract is ratified.
More than 300 paddlers on 16 different teams will race across the Grand Marais harbor on Saturday during the first annual Dragon Boat Festival. Each team of 22 will race across the harbor from west to east on a 500- meter course.
An impressive number of runners turned up for the annual Fisherman’s Picnic Trail Run at Pincushion Mountain Saturday with 98 runners competing on a well-mowed but hilly five-mile course.

Serious discussion about problems caused by public drinking and intoxication, particularly on nights during Fisherman’s Picnic, took place at the county board meeting Aug. 9. Sheriff John Lyght initiated the subject by commenting on the picnic weekend. “It’s getting worse every year. It’s turning into nothing but a drunken brawl.”
A fleet of about 20 racing boats arrived in Grand Marais Wednesday morning from Thunder Bay after finishing the “International,” and stayed over until Thursday morning for a 10 a.m. start on the race to Bayfield, Wisconsin.
With the departure of Bill and Fran Radek from Grand Marais, operation of the funeral home has passed to Cavallin Funeral Home, which also operates in Two Harbors.

The new Miss North Shore is Ann Sjoberg, succeeding Cindy Cushman.
Helen Hubman was the best guesser in the Crazy Daze contest conducted by the News-Herald last Thursday as part of their activities. The contest consisted of guessing the number of pieces of type, border, cuts, spacing material and gimmicks that went to make up the full-page ad on Crazy Daze. Mrs. Hubman guessed 700; the actual count was 723. There were 99 guesses, ranging from 22 to 2,000,225.
A 30-mph wind lashed the shore early Wednesday morning, according to the Coast Guard. Trees were reported down on many inland areas.
A light frost nipped cucumbers and tomatoes Sunday morning on Maple Hill in the first reported frost of the late summer.
Despite a record run of 2,140 papers last week the issue was sold out. We will pay 10 cents each for July 30 and Aug. 6 issues until we have enough. No mail copies can be paid for.

The crew of men who were loading pulpwood in the harbor here, while waiting for other boats, sawed and split four cords of wood for Mrs. E. Douglas gratis. Mrs. Douglas wishes to express her appreciation for what they did.
Spencer Roberts had the end of his finger taken off while assisting in changing an automobile tire. The end of his finger was caught between the rim and a pry. Dr. F.B. Hicks dressed the wound and it is giving the boy little if any trouble.
Donald Christiansen of the Free-Press of Armory, Wis., while touring the North Shore, stopped off to inspect the News-Herald office yesterday.
