Normal operations have resumed at the Cook County Recycling Center following a May 31 arson fire that halted collection of materials for about a week. Solid Waste Director Tim Nelson said things are up and running again after several days of intensive clean-up.

The Kiyi, a multimillion dollar research vessel operated by the Lake Superior Biological Station, docked along the breakwall of the Grand Marais harbor last week. It is just one stop on the Kiyi’s annual journey to circumnavigate Lake Superior collecting vital information on the biology and population of all fish species in the big lake. The vessel is named after the kiyi, a deepwater chub species found throughout Lake Superior.

June 13, 1994

The Grand Marais City Council decided June 8 not to act on a scheduled second reading of ordinance 176 setting parking limits on commercial trucks in residential districts. Council had passed the first reading of the ordinance May 25, but chose to refer it to the planning and zoning commission for fact-finding and recommendation.

The Cook County Board of Commissioners decided May 24 to go ahead with production of an informational brochure to build their case in favor of a major courthouse expansion project. The brochure announces that the project “is about solving serious problems which affect all of us.”

Saturday, June 4 was a proud day for 43 CCHS graduates and their families, as the students were honored by a crowd of several hundred people gathered at the school auditorium for commencement 1994.

June 11, 1964

Mrs. Lillian Webb, teacher in Grand Marais and Hovland for the past 12 years, said farewell to teaching this year and on Tuesday she will be on a plane going to New York. She will see the World’s Fair and visit friends, and beyond that her plans are still indefinite, except that her home will be in Duluth.

Mrs. Richard Ounsworth, known in her native England as Madame Evelyn Witte, has returned to Grand Marais for another season of music instruction.

Ed Kluck, who has been in the local hospital for three weeks, is at home and says he feel fine.

90 Years Ago
June 12, 1924

One of the county Ford trucks and a Dodge touring car had a collision above the courthouse Saturday night. The truck was turned bottom-side up and the Dodge was pretty much of a wreck. Nobody was hurt.

S.W. Ficklip is building a “hot dog” stand north of his barber shop. He expects soon to be handing lunches through the opening in the wall.

A meeting will be held at the News- Herald office June 14 at 8 p.m. for the purpose of organizing a gun club. All who are interested are invited to be present.

J. Gilbert Jelly of Two Harbors, a candidate for the legislature, was in Grand Marais last evening and today. He is a congenial fellow and did a lot of visiting among the people of the town.
