The recent hike in gas prices over $2 per gallon in Minnesota and $1 per liter in Canada coincided with the start of the fishing season. It will be interesting to see how rising fuel costs affect angling travel and tourism. Some of us may fish closer to home this summer, which could be good for Minnesota tourism.

The class of 2004 with its 43 graduates will gather May 29 for an afternoon of ceremony, music and laughter. It’s the class that won the state math contest, and Principal John Engelking said that even though it’s a small class, it is of high quality. “Anybody who attended the Senior Show on Tuesday night certainly left with an impression of success, quality and great aspirations for the future,” Engelking said.

As part of an ongoing ecological project called “What’s a Forest?” Birch Grove school students, staff and volunteers planted 350 white pine seedlings in a clearcut area near Pancore Lake. Areas included in the study are timber, water, wildlife, native plants and soils. Spring activities are designed to give students an understanding of how all kinds and sizes of living things work together to make a healthy forest. In the fall, the groups will begin to develop an environmental center on the Birch Grove property.

Four yearling wolves which were orphaned this winter when their parents died on Isle Royale National Park are all alive and well, according to a wildlife biologist.

May 28, 1964

The ribbon was cut at the international boundary at Pigeon River last Saturday afternoon, and the new bridge was officially dedicated. This is the third bridge built at Pigeon as a connecting link between Canada and the United States.

The veneer plant west of the village is in operation again despite the fire that destroyed the boiler plant house early Thursday. The fire, of unknown origin, did not damage the boiler itself. A new boiler is being built.

Rolf Skrien of Way of the Wilderness Outfitters sat in a canoe party whose prime purpose was for a bear hunt.

A young banker from Thailand has spent several days at the Grand Marais State Bank this week studying the American system of bank examiners. He will be in this country about seven months.

May 29, 1924

Miss Mildred Berg started working at the Community Restaurant Friday.

Mr. John Johnson of Colvill has painted his car red.

The well at the Cook County courthouse is being deepened.

Mr. and Mrs. M. Arnold from the S-Curve Inn were in town Friday.

The Midway Service Station has a new Overland Blue Bird. Mr. Hirmer brought it back with him Wednesday night.
