A trumpeter swan was seen hanging out in the harbor in Grand Marais on Monday, delighting everyone who saw it. The swan was originally tagged and released in Marquette County, Michigan in 2001, and was seen in Keweenaw Bay, Michigan in 2002. It spent the summer of 2003 in the western UP. How he got to Grand Marais is a good question, but DNR officials say if it finds enough natural habitat and food, he might hang around for a while.

One of the last pieces of the improvement of the fire hall and town hall complex at Tofte is almost complete. Most recently the hose drying tower that has been sought for many years was installed.

The Cook County School Board tabled a motion to sign an agreement to partially fund a second teacher at Birch Grove Elementary School at its Monday meeting. School board members said they couldn’t vote on an agreement that was completely different from the one that had been already worked out with the townships.

The hospital board approved the purchase of a new ambulance to replace the nearly worn-out 1987 unit. The purchase price of the new ambulance, a 1994 Road Rescue Supermedic with a diesel engine, is $71,883. The old ambulance has 66,000 tough miles on it, needs both transmission and engine repairs, and is too small, according to members of the crew.

The opening of the fishing season brewed up its usual stew. It rained, it poured, it was overcast and a puff of wind brought in a smattering of cold air.

At a special meeting work session May 13, the county commissioners decided to begin informing the public about courthouse building needs, problems, and proposed solutions at a public hearing June 20. Commissioners acknowledged that they are committed to two things about the pending building project. One is the continued use of the historic courthouse building and the concept of expansion on the present land site. Second, they are committed to combining departments and services within one building rather than maintaining and creating separate centers for different county services.

May 21, 1964

At a joint session of the Village Council and the county commissioners Monday night, bids were opened for the plantmix surfacing of 5.2 miles of village streets. The village project was awarded to Range Blacktop of Eveleth for $57,010.08.

The Jack Nelsons arrived last week from Ann Arbor, Michigan to begin operation of their newly acquired resort – Jocko’s Clearwater Lodge on Clearwater Lake. They bought the resort from John Henry Eliasen last fall.

Twin moose calves were seen Monday evening just behind the Wedgewood Motel. The Norman Larsens, motel owners, reported seeing them about 75 feet away.

Mrs. Chas. Anderson yesterday checked necessary work to be done at the Wild Flower Sanctuary by Garden Club members next week.

May 22, 1924

Andrew Everson of Maple Hill fell off a load of hay Monday and hurt his back and shoulders.

Arvid Erickson has returned from Chicago where he has organized a company to manufacture the wrench which he has been exhibiting, the patent of which he owns. The Minnesota Securities Commission has given him permission to sell stock in his company.

The person that took the key out of Backlund Bros. truck Sunday night while the truck was parked in front of the Lutheran church is requested to return the same and receive reward.

Jack Dewar went north with supplies and equipment to start work on the road to Gateway Lodge. The road will run on the north side of Hungry Jack Lake.
