Just in time for dinner, the lights went off in Cook County for one to six hours at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. A lightning arrestor in the Colvill substation failed, downing transmission lines from Schroeder to Grand Portage and up the Gunflint Trail.

The Cook County Board agreed Tuesday to hold a public hearing and order a survey of several sections of Hovland in an effort to recover lost section corners and establish firm boundaries. The cost of the project is estimated at $80,000, or $37 per acre.

Carah Nordman, Sarah Smith and Beth Lehman were awarded the first Wes Hedstrom scholarship from Cook County Higher Education. All three students are using distance education technology to work towards an associate degree in the medical field.

Responding to a report and request from Gunflint Trail Fire Chief George Carlson, the county board of commissioners voted to allocate an additional $10,000 for two new fire hall buildings at strategic locations on the Trail. The county had previously approved $10,000 in support of the project.

Hazel Mitchell celebrated her 100th birthday at the North Shore Care Center. Close to 30 family members joined in the celebration.

Fourth-grade teacher Gerald Anderson is retiring at the end of the current school year. He has been with the school district for more than 20 years. Also at the school, Margaret Rasmussen has been chosen by faculty ballot as the 1994 teacher of the year. During her tenure which began in 1969, Rasmussen has taught every grade from kindergarten through grade 12, and coached several sports.

“Wonderland by Night” is the theme chosen by this year’s junior class for their annual banquet and prom Saturday evening. The banquet will be held at St. John’s hall with the graduating seniors, high school faculty and school board members as honored guests. The prom will begin at 9 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. Stanley Hedstrom was named prom king and he has selected Diane Backlund as prom queen.

Thirty-five thousand yearling lake trout were planted in Lake Superior out of Grand Marais Tuesday. The U.S. Coast Guard used its boat and assisted in taking the fish outside the breakwater. Next week, a like amount will be stocked in the Hovland area.

The maple syrup business this spring has been anything but good on the North Shore, according to Bill Deater of Hovland, who annually runs a maple syrup business. It has been an on-again off-again season, which makes it unprofitable to work the trees. Deater estimates he has collected about 40 gallons all-told this spring.

At Tofte May 2, the Grand Marais high school will meet Tofte in debate upon the question, “Resolved, That Immigration Should Be Prohibited for Five Years.” Grand Marais will represent the negative and those to champion the side of Grand Marais are Hubert Scott, Genevieve Bayle and Carl Lindskog. We were not furnished with the names of the Tofte debaters. A cordial invitation is extended to anyone wishing to go. No charge for admission.

Anyone leaving Grand Marais intending to go to or pass by Jock Mock are requested to bring my mail.

Ertsgard Brothers are hauling dirt to fill up the alley back of Sjoberg’s restaurant.

Joe Thomas drove his Ford over the bank Sunday but escaped uninjured.
