The Cook County School Board members decided to table a vote on whether to pay for a second teacher at Birch Grove School at its regular meeting Monday. Instead, it agreed to send representatives to a special meeting with people from the Birch Grove Foundation and the three townships. The purpose of that meeting is to see if some kind of agreement can be worked out for a second teacher at the elementary school.

Power in Grand Marais was turned off at midnight Tuesday in order for the city’s Public Utilities Commission to repair a bad connection at the substation. The bad connection was discovered after a lineman heard an unusual sound on the transformer and an infrared camera from Great River Energy was brought in to look at the connection. It was “hot.” If the connection hadn’t been fixed, said Mike Taylor of the PUC, the transformer could’ve burned up. The repair took 45 minutes.

April 25, 1994

The Army Corps of Engineers will dredge 1,500 yards of material from the Grand Marais harbor in May. The operation will take a week.

For the first time ever, the circus is coming to town! Community Center Manager Diane Booth announced that plans are completed for the performance at the Community Center by the Jose Cole International Circus on May 25. Booth cautioned that people shouldn’t expect a great big circus with all the spectaculars and dazzlers. But it will have a clown. “This is a small circus,” Booth said. “But there will be a magician, bird and dog acts and circus animals. Unfortunately, we don’t have facilities for trapeze acts or high-wire acrobatics.” Circus animals include an elephant, a leopard and a llama.

April 23, 1964

The Lutsen Town Hall is now equipped with dishes, tableware, chairs, tables, heat, water, electric stove and refrigerator, and ready to be used. Anyone wishing to use it will call Harriet Hansen and make arrangements with her.

The large Hedstrom barn has been moved to the planer mill site. Here it is being used in connection with the newly installed shaving baler. These baled shavings are a byproduct of their lumber business and are in great demand by the turkey farmers.

Mrs. Clarence Hemmingsen says two turkey vultures have been identified in the county. They are not supposed to migrate this far north.

Anna Jacobsen of Hovland says she has sold her property, including her house. It was sold to a man from Chicago. Mrs. Jacobsen expects to remain at her home for the summer, and after that her plans are uncertain.

April 24, 1924

Two county trucks with snow plows opened the road to South Brule on the Gunflint Road yesterday.

H. Smuland of Cascade was in town Saturday to purchase fish nets to replace the ones lost in the recent storm.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sjoberg returned from Duluth Friday. They were delayed twice by being stuck in the mud – once at Spruce Creek and once just east of Little Marais.

John Running and his two boys made a trip to Isle Royale on the steamer Swansea Sunday.
