More than 60 Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, parents and siblings turned up for the Pinewood Derby at St. John’s Catholic Church on Saturday. The competition was fierce as cars built by 17 Cub Scouts, five Boy Scouts, four siblings and 11 parents ran cars against each other for trophies and certificates.
According to a report released last month by the state auditor, “little” Cook County is No. 1 for per capita spending and No. 2 for “unreserved fund balances.” The state auditor said fund balances should be no more than 40-50 percent of annual expenditures. Cook County’s is over 90 percent. “Counties with fund balances well above the acceptable range are probably holding substantially more taxpayer dollars than is necessary,” said Auditor Patricia Anderson. “Citizens in these counties should ask their county commissioners why so much money is being held in reserve.”

Grand Marais city clerktreasurer Aadne Eliassen reported to the council March 30 that he has inspected three structural problems that exist in the new fire hall. The west wall of the building has lifted about one-half inch from the foundation, with the result that two interior doors cannot be closed properly. The freezing of the water in the supply line to the building is a second problem, and the third is the cracks in the brick wall at the building’s northwest corner. It is believed the damage was caused by the presence of excess moisture in the ground from heavy rains that occurred during foundation construction.
Stating that “many of our policies are too protectionist,” Cook County School Superintendent Don Langan recommended policy amendments to the school board last Monday evening. The changes would allow the administration to bill families for staff time spent disciplining repeat rules offenders, and to mandate family therapy at parents’ expense before some students can re-enter school after multiple suspensions.

The early stream trout fishing season will open Saturday but local streams are not being too cooperative. Ice covers the mouths of the streams where fishing will be legal up to the first natural barrier. The rivers included in the early season are located in Cook, Lake and St. Louis counties.
Another form of snowmobiling is a familiar scene with Ricky and David Scherer’s two dogs pulling a bright little bobsled with one or two passengers at a time, cutting across the crusty snow.

Wahlstrom, newly elected trustee, failed to qualify and Ed Toftey was appointed to fill the vacancy. Mr. Toftey qualified and took his seat last night.
