After extensive discussion about the poor condition of their two existing fire trucks, Schroeder town supervisors voted Tuesday to go forward with the purchase of two new fire trucks at a cost of $86,800. The trucks will be paid for by a combination of $34,000 in the fire truck replacement fund, and a 10-year interestfree loan of $55,000 from the county. Fire Chief Phil Bonin and others expressed relief at the prospect of replacing what they cite as dangerous equipment.

Put on your red dress attitude and a red dress, dust off your best lies and sense of fun and plan on attending the Red Dress Party at the Grand Marais Art Colony on Valentine’s Day. This is the sixth year that women and girls (and occasionally boys and men) have gathered in the depths of winter to celebrate community and have some fun.

Feb. 14, 1994

The Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery succeeded in getting $4,000 in funding from the Cook County Board of Commissioners, contingent on equivalent support from the city of Grand Marais. Peggy Heston and SueEllen Kruse presented the request, reporting a need for $11,500 to meet 1994 operating expenses. A membership drive is under way, and voluntary donations from visitors to the gallery are growing steadily. Four thousand people have visited the gallery in two months.

Cook County High School has been designated by the State Department of Education as the arts magnet school in the Eighth Congressional District, giving the school an opportunity to add intensive interdisciplinary arts education to the regular high school curriculum. The initial planning grant of $8,000 is expected to lead to additional funding up to $25,000, though the program is designed to become selfsustaining.

Feb. 13, 1964

Two Tofte men, ages 25 and 56, lost their lives in a stalled car Monday morning, death said to be due to carbon monoxide gas poisoning. The two were going to work on the Tait Lake Road when the car slid into a ditch and became stuck in the snow. One of the men was still alive when rescuers came upon them, and artificial respiration was tried without avail.

Robert F. Baley left Tuesday morning for his home near Austin, Minn., after spending a week at the Axel Bergstrom home. Mr. Baley is an enthusiastic North Shore booster and while here enjoyed snowsledding, snowshoeing, ice fishing and visiting friends.

Will the party who took the red leather-bound volume of Shakespeare and other reading material please return them to Mrs. H.T. Stickney?

Feb. 14, 1924

The Lakeview dairy has added another thoroughbred Guernsey cow to their herd.

John W. Clark was a passenger on the east mail bus Friday bound for Mineral Center to buy some sleigh dogs.

Frank LeSage came in from Hughes camp Saturday. On Thursday of last week one of the horses he was driving kicked him in the knee, incapacitating him for service as a teamster for the present.

Sam Linnell has filed on a homestead on the reservation.
