The Cook County commissioners held their annual reorganization meeting Tuesday, but made very few changes as they made appointments to a long list of boards and committees. Bob Fenwick was unanimously elected board chairman while Jan Hall was chosen as vicechair.

Two juniors at Cook County High School will have the opportunity of a lifetime later this year when they travel to St. Paul to be pages at the Minnesota House of Representatives for one week. It’s a rare treat for any student and rarer still for two to be chosen from Cook County to participate in the program in the same year – both young men said they plan to make the most of it. Adrian Hess and Charlie Rude both said they are looking forward to the experience.

As the county looks at proposed courthouse expansion, financing is the biggest concern. The county has resources available, but the bulk of the money needed would have to be raised through a bond issue. The county has $1.1 million in its building fund, and approximately half of that could be used for the project. Other potential funding sources include grants which the county is pursuing, an increase in federal and state in-lieu-of-taxes payments, and funds allocated to the building project from taxforfeited land sales.

A home on County Road 7 burned to the ground Friday when a wood stove in the garage started a fire. Grand Marais firefighters found the structure engulfed in flames when they arrived.

Minnesota bear hunters took a total of 2,976 black bears in 1993, according to the Department of Natural Resources. That’s the secondhighest ever, behind the 3,175 bears killed in 1992.

Jan. 9, 1964

The port of entry at Pigeon River has now been officially designated as Grand Portage, and all mail will come to it through the Grand Portage post office. It was formerly known as the Pigeon River entry.

The Village Council held its reorganizational meeting Tuesday night, with the new mayor, Andrew L. Johnson, taking over the duties of his office from former Mayor Clark McElevey. Other members on the council are Ed Humphrey, Tom Eckel Jr., Harvey Morck and Alton Olsen.

The holiday found a large influx of skiers at the Lutsen Resort Ski Area. Among recent groups participating were the Jack & Jill Club of Chicago, the Robbinsdale Ski Club, and the Denfeld High School Skiers.

Jan. 10, 1924

Chas. Perault left here this morning for his trapping territory on the game reserve, 63-4w.

Chris Marken of Hovland took a load of fish to Duluth one day last week and returned Monday with a load of freight for different business dealers in town.

The state tractor made its maiden trip Thursday to Good Harbor Hill, in charge of Dick Anderson.

H.O. Toftey, Erick Johnson and Cornelius Hall will be the snow plow crew this winter. They have for equipment one tractor, three trucks, and will keep the road open this winter.

Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Johnson entertained a few friends at a radio party last Wednesday evening. Some of the guests played ma jung.
