Last week, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency announced that the Poplar River, from the Superior Hiking Trail bridge downstream three miles to its mouth at Lake Superior, was among 215 waters statewide that were added to the agency’s Impaired Waters list. Such waters do not meet the water quality standards of the national Clean Water Act. The MPCA recently completed a monitoring study of six North Shore streams that were considered at risk for pollution due to increased development in their watersheds. Of the six, four (including the lower Poplar) were added to the Impaired Waters list, all for turbidity problems.

A 26-year-old Chisholm man is facing numerous charges.
